What makes Ochiai village special?

Ochiai is one of Japan's most dramatically situated villages, built on a 38-degree slope at 390 meters elevation in the remote Iya Valley. Its collection of traditional thatched-roof farmhouses has remained remarkably preserved due to centuries of isolation, offering an authentic view of mountain village life. The settlement was designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 2005, recognizing its cultural and architectural significance.

Can I stay overnight in Ochiai village?

Yes, several restored traditional farmhouses now operate as guesthouses where visitors can experience authentic mountain living. These accommodations allow you to sleep in historic buildings with thatched roofs and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere after day-trippers have left. Booking well in advance is essential, as the number of available rooms is limited and the village's growing popularity means accommodation fills quickly.

How difficult is it to reach Ochiai without a car?

Reaching Ochiai by public transportation is challenging but possible. The nearest train station is Oboke Station on the JR Dosan Line, but buses to the Iya Valley area run infrequently and don't provide direct access to Ochiai itself. Most visitors without cars use a combination of train, limited bus service, and taxi for the final leg. Renting a car provides significantly more flexibility and is the recommended option, with the drive from Tokushima city taking approximately 90 minutes.

Is there an entrance fee to visit the village?

There is no fee to walk through Ochiai's lanes and explore the village itself, as it remains a living community with resident families. However, the Ochiai Folklore Museum, housed in a 300-year-old farmhouse, charges a small admission fee to view its collection of traditional agricultural tools and household items. Visitors should be respectful of private property and the residents who still call this historic village home.

What should I bring when visiting Ochiai?

Given Ochiai's remote location, visitors should come prepared with food, water, and any necessary supplies, as the village has minimal facilities and no convenience stores or restaurants. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for navigating the steep, narrow pathways between houses. A camera is highly recommended for capturing the dramatic hillside setting and valley views. If visiting in winter, warm clothing is necessary as mountain temperatures drop significantly, and if staying overnight, confirm what amenities your accommodation provides.

Ochiai Village, Miyoshi

Last updated Aug 15, 2026

Ochiai is a remote mountain hamlet perched on the steep slopes of the Iya Valley in Tokushima Prefecture, western Japan. Located at an elevation of approximately 390 meters, this traditional settlement clings dramatically to a 38-degree incline, earning it recognition as one of Japan's most precipitous villages. The cluster of thatched-roof farmhouses appears frozen in time, offering visitors a glimpse into rural Japanese life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.

The village's isolation helped preserve its architectural heritage and traditional way of life. Ochiai developed as a farming community where residents cultivated steep hillside plots using methods passed down through generations. The distinctive kayabuki thatched roofs, made from miscanthus grass, require replacement every 30 to 40 years and represent a building technique that has become increasingly rare in modern Japan. The settlement gained protection as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 2005, ensuring its cultural landscape remains intact.

Visitors can explore the village's narrow pathways that wind between historic farmhouses, many of which are still inhabited by local families. Several restored buildings now operate as guesthouses, allowing travelers to experience traditional mountain living firsthand. The Ochiai Folklore Museum occupies a 300-year-old farmhouse and displays agricultural tools, household items, and exhibits explaining the village's history and the challenges of mountain agriculture. The panoramic views across the Iya Valley gorge are particularly striking, with the village appearing to cascade down the mountainside above the river far below.

Ochiai lies approximately 50 kilometers southwest of central Tokushima city. The most practical approach is by car, which takes roughly 90 minutes from Tokushima along Route 438 and 439. Public transportation is limited; infrequent buses serve the wider Iya Valley area from Oboke Station on the JR Dosan Line, though reaching Ochiai specifically requires careful planning or taxi service. The village itself has no admission fee for wandering its lanes, though the folklore museum charges a small entry fee. Given the remote location and limited facilities, visitors should plan accordingly with provisions and confirm accommodation in advance if staying overnight.
