Ogasawara Fisheries Center

4.3 (192)AquariumPoint Of InterestEstablishment

The Ogasawara Fisheries Center serves as both a research facility and educational attraction in the Ogasawara Islands, a remote volcanic archipelago located approximately 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo. The center was established to support the sustainable fishing practices and marine conservation efforts that are vital to this UNESCO World Heritage site, which was inscribed in 2011 for its exceptional natural biodiversity and unique ecosystem.

The facility plays a crucial role in preserving the delicate marine environment surrounding the Ogasawara Islands, often called the "Galápagos of the Orient." The waters here host an extraordinary array of marine life, including sea turtles, dolphins, and numerous endemic fish species found nowhere else on Earth. The center conducts research on local fish populations, turtle conservation, and sustainable aquaculture methods that help maintain the ecological balance while supporting the local community's traditional fishing heritage.

Visitors to the Ogasawara Fisheries Center can observe aquaculture operations, learn about marine conservation programs, and view displays featuring local marine species. The center offers insights into the unique challenges of maintaining fisheries in an isolated island environment and showcases efforts to protect endangered sea turtle populations through breeding and release programs. Educational exhibits explain the relationship between the island's residents and the surrounding ocean, highlighting traditional fishing methods alongside modern conservation techniques.

Reaching the Ogasawara Islands requires taking the Ogasawara Maru ferry from Tokyo's Takeshiba Pier, a journey that takes approximately 24 hours. The ferry typically operates every three to four days depending on the season, making trip planning essential. Once on Chichijima, the main island, the fisheries center is accessible by local transportation or on foot from the port area.

You can see many species that are native and unique to the island, as well as seeing rarer fish from up close (and brush some teeth haha)

Don’t forget to brush the teeth of the fish outside!!
Don't skip this place.
Enjoy a soothing experience at this small aquarium. Although this aquarium is small, it is clean and carefully maintained. One unique and popular experience is the "Aqaba Toothbrushing." Be sure to give it a try! Renovations are planned for the near future, so we're looking forward to seeing how it evolves. This is a warm and welcoming spot that's also recommended for families.
This is a small aquarium on Chichijima Island. It's within walking distance from the Omura area, so if you have some free time, I recommend checking it out. While I wasn't able to do it on the day, it seems you can also try brushing the teeth of a red snapper. The exhibits include fish that are likely found in the waters off Ogasawara. There's also a squid tank outside, which I wasn't able to see on the day, but perhaps it's available at certain times of the year. While it's small, each tank is large, and it displays more rugged fish than cute ones, making it a unique aquarium. There's also a Japan Coast Guard patrol boat anchored right in front of the premises. It was my first time seeing one up close, so I was surprised to see it so close.
