Okaya Silk Studio, Nagano

The Okaya Silk Museum, also known as Silk Fact Okaya, stands as the only museum in Japan where visitors can view silk-spinning at an adjoining silk mill while learning about the history of the silk-spinning industry. From the beginning of the Meiji period until after World War II, Okaya in the Suwa area was the world's leading producer of silk, and the city became renowned as "Silk Okaya" during this era. The museum reopened at its current location in August 2014, marking its 10th anniversary in 2024 and celebrating 60 years since its original founding.

The museum houses more than 30,000 artifacts, including silk-reeling machines, fabrics, and beautiful kimono. Its exhibition traces the development of Japan's silk-spinning industry from the opening of Yokohama Port through the establishment of modern manufacturing techniques. The facility preserves the heritage of an industry that supported Japan's modernization and economic development during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Visitors experience the unique combination of a working silk factory and museum displays. Many of the reeling machines are still running and visitors can see silk workers creating silk right in front of you, providing a rare opportunity to witness traditional silk production techniques in action at the Miyasaka Silk Mill located within the museum premises. The facility also features a Cocoon Craft Room where guests can create silk-themed souvenirs, along with a gift shop offering silk products for purchase.

Admission fees for individuals are 510 yen for adults, 310 yen for junior and senior high school students, and 160 yen for elementary school students. Group discounts are available for parties of 10 or more. The museum is closed on Wednesdays, the day following national holidays, and from December 29 to January 3. It is located next to the Okaya Chamber of Commerce, accessible from the city center.
