Okayama Asahikawa Sightseeing Cruise

4.5 (27)Tourist AttractionPoint Of InterestEstablishment
Last updated Mar 30, 2026

The Okayama Asahikawa Sightseeing Cruise, also known as the Karasugi Water Boat, offers visitors a unique perspective on Okayama's most celebrated landmarks by navigating the Asahi River, which flows through the center of Okayama City. This waterway experience connects passengers to the region's feudal past while showcasing its architectural treasures from an uncommon vantage point.

During the Edo period, lords would travel by boat from the castle to the gardens, establishing a historical precedent that modern visitors can now replicate. The cruise recreates this aristocratic tradition, allowing passengers to experience the journey as feudal lords once did between Okayama Castle and the renowned Okayama Korakuen Garden, one of Japan's three most celebrated landscape gardens.

The 30-minute journey provides intimate views of the castle's imposing stone walls and the city's historic bridges from water level, offering perspectives unavailable from land-based observation points. Passengers can admire the seasonal scenery and enjoy the majestic scenery that Okayama is proud of as the boat glides along the gentle current. Weather conditions and tide levels may affect operations.

Access to the boarding point near Korakuen Garden requires approximately 25 minutes walking from JR Okayama Station, or visitors can take a 15-minute bus ride or a 4-minute tram journey to Shiroshita Station, followed by a 10-minute walk. The location at 1-6 Korakuen, Kita-ku places the cruise conveniently near other major attractions. Payment options include QR payment systems such as PayPay, though credit cards and electronic money are not accepted.

Blessed with fine weather, we enjoyed a refreshing breeze on the boat and listened to the boatman's clear explanations, making for a very worthwhile boat trip. Okayama Castle 🏯, viewed from the Asahi River, changes its appearance depending on the viewing angle. I wouldn't have known this if I hadn't listened to the boatman's explanations. We were also shown the arched Tsurumi Bridge. I highly recommend taking a boat tour. It's a great recommendation! 👌

We took the first boat out on Sunday morning, departing at 10:00 AM. We were the only guests that day, so we had the boat all to ourselves. In addition to the recorded commentary, the friendly boatman explained various aspects of Okayama Castle's charm. We were able to see Okayama Castle from many different angles, and it was well worth the price! The boarding point has now moved to the foot of a bridge near Okayama Castle.

I took a solo trip in September 2025. When I went to Okayama Castle to sightsee, I learned about the sightseeing boat and decided to take a ride. A ticket for Okayama Castle, Korakuen Garden, and the sightseeing boat costs 2000 yen in total. The course is 30 minutes long, circling Okayama Castle. There were two staff members, both very kind; they answered my questions and even took pictures for me! The boat was very smooth, and the interior was clean. The life jackets were also clean and in excellent condition! If you're unsure what to do, I highly recommend taking this ride! It was a wonderful memory. Thank you for your kind service!

The other day, my child and I went on the Okayama Asahikawa Sightseeing Cruise. Our guide explained the history and culture of Okayama Castle and the surrounding area in an easy-to-understand manner, with a touch of humor, and the 30 minutes felt like it flew by. The view of Okayama Castle from the river has a different charm than when viewed from land, and it makes for great photos! My child was delighted and said, "I want to go on this again!" It's a recommended spot that the whole family can enjoy casually.
