What other travelers are saying about Okayama City Handayama Botanical Garden
Beautiful botanical garden where I really amazed by the harmony of cherry blossoms, blue sky and green colors. One can enjoy the magnificent view of Okayama city from the top. Highly recommended for those who want to escape from the hustle & bustle or enjoy some good time with family and friends.
Cherry blossoms peak in late March to early April, azaleas bloom in May, and hydrangeas appear in June. The rose garden has two flowering periods in May and October-November. Autumn foliage is best viewed in mid-November. The greenhouse maintains tropical plants year-round regardless of season.
Plan for 1.5 to 2 hours to cover the main pathways and greenhouse. Photographers or plant enthusiasts may need 3 hours during peak seasons. The hillside terrain includes gentle slopes throughout the grounds.
Plant labels and signs are primarily in Japanese with minimal English translation. No regular English-language tours are offered. Groups can request Japanese-language tours by advance arrangement. A translation app is recommended for international visitors.
The hillside location creates accessibility limitations. Main pathways are paved but include slopes and steps. The greenhouse area offers better accessibility with level surfaces. Full exploration may not be possible for wheelchair users. Contact the garden in advance for specific accessibility information.
Very nice place to visit at Okayama city. You can see the city from top of the mountain. A variety of flowers and trees with some seasonal speciality. One can take own food and enjoy whole day in this mountainous botanical garden.
Lastly, sitting around the hills provides a special feel to the nature.
Lots of amazing floral finds. Exhibits in the hall are available from time to time. I suggest you check the page first before heading to find if various flowers are in season/in full bloom
Wonderful botanical garden on the side of a hill. We came during cherry blossoms so that was the main attraction. Very picturesque and plenty of places to sit in silence and solitude and just soak in the nature. Note that the time of year you visit will determine what trees/ botanicals are blooming. Not all the areas are in bloom year round. The rose bushes, Japanese maples, and Lily pads were all essentially off exhibit and nothing to look at. But they have English maps and entry fee is quite low.
It’s located in a comparative high land of Okayama, so you can have a great view of the whole city. Anyway it’s worth seeing and let you and your kids spend a day of leisure moments.
