Omiwa Shrine, Sakurai

Omiwa Shrine, located in Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture, stands as one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines, with origins dating back over 1,300 years. The shrine is dedicated to Ōmononushi, a deity associated with sake brewing, medicine, and nation-building. Unlike most Shinto shrines, Omiwa Shrine has no main hall (honden) because the shrine worships Mount Miwa itself as a sacred object, following an ancient form of nature worship called "shintaizan." This direct worship of the mountain represents one of the earliest forms of Shinto practice in Japan.

The shrine holds profound cultural significance as a center for sake production traditions. Many sake breweries across Japan display a ball of cedar leaves called sugidama at their entrances, a custom that originated at Omiwa Shrine. The shrine's connection to sake brewing attracts both religious pilgrims and those in the brewing industry who come to pay respects. The complex features distinctive architecture, including the haiden (worship hall) where visitors pray while facing the mountain itself, and a striking torii gate that marks the boundary to the sacred mountain.

Visitors can explore the shrine grounds and photograph the iconic torii, though climbing Mount Miwa requires registration at the shrine office and adherence to strict rules, as the mountain remains sacred. Photography is prohibited on the mountain, and visitors must complete the approximately two to three-hour round trip before the registration office closes. The shrine precincts also include smaller shrines and a museum displaying historical artifacts related to the site's religious significance.

Admission to the shrine grounds is free, though donations are customary. The shrine is accessible via JR Miwa Station on the Sakurai Line, requiring approximately a five-minute walk from the station. From major cities, visitors typically travel to Sakurai Station or Nara Station before transferring to the Sakurai Line. The shrine is located about 20 kilometers southeast of Nara city and can also be reached by bus or taxi from Sakurai Station.
