Ondo no Seto Park, Kure
Ondo no Seto Park is located in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture, overlooking the Ondo Strait, a narrow waterway separating Kurahashi Island from the mainland. The park was established to showcase this historically and geographically significant channel, which measures only 90 meters at its narrowest point. The strait has served as an important maritime route since ancient times, and the area gained strategic importance during the Edo period when the Hiroshima Domain controlled shipping through these waters. The construction of the Ondo Bridge in 1962 connected Kurahashi Island to the mainland, transforming local transportation.
The Ondo Strait is renowned for its dramatic tidal currents, which can reach speeds of 10 knots during peak flow. This natural phenomenon occurs due to the extreme narrowness of the channel combined with significant tidal variation in the Seto Inland Sea. Access Ondo no Seto Park from Hiroshima Station by taking the JR Kure Line to Ondo Station, requiring approximately 45 minutes. From the station, the park is a 10-minute walk. By car, take the Higashi-Hiroshima Kure Road and exit at Ondo Interchange, with the park located roughly 5 minutes from the exit. Admission to the park is free. The nearest major city is Kure, located 5 kilometers north, which offers additional transportation connections and tourist facilities.
