Onjoji Temple (Mitsui Temple), Otsu

Onjoji Temple, formally known as Miidera but commonly called Mitsui Temple, stands as one of Japan's most historically significant Buddhist temples in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. Founded in 686 CE during the Asuka period, the temple serves as the head temple of the Jimon sect of Tendai Buddhism. The temple's alternative name, Miidera, derives from the legend that emperors Tenchi, Temmu, and Jito used water from the temple's sacred spring to bathe newborn princes, with "mii" meaning "three wells."

The temple complex sprawls across the slopes of Mount Hiei overlooking Lake Biwa, Japan's largest freshwater lake. The site features over 40 buildings, including several designated National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. The main hall, Kondo, which was reconstructed in 1599, houses a hidden Buddha statue of Miroku Bosatsu that remains concealed from public view. The temple's Niomon Gate and pagodas exemplify traditional Japanese temple architecture, while the grounds bloom spectacularly with approximately 1,000 cherry trees each spring, making it one of the region's premier hanami viewing spots.

Visitors can explore the extensive grounds that offer panoramic views of Lake Biwa and the surrounding mountains. The temple is famous for its Benkei Bell, a large bronze bell associated with the legendary warrior monk Benkei, who allegedly dragged it up the mountain from a rival temple. The temple also displays an impressive collection of Buddhist art and historical artifacts in its treasure house. Walking the temple paths reveals numerous sub-temples, gardens, and meditation spaces that provide insight into centuries of Buddhist practice.

Onjoji Temple is accessible from Kyoto Station by taking the JR Tokaido Line to Otsu Station, followed by a 10-minute bus ride or taxi to the temple. Alternatively, visitors can take the Keihan Ishiyama Sakamoto Line to Miidera Station, from which the temple is a 10-minute walk uphill. Admission to the temple grounds costs ¥600 for adults, with an additional fee of ¥600 for entry to the treasure house. The temple's proximity to Kyoto, just 20 minutes by train, makes it an accessible day trip destination while remaining quieter than the capital's more crowded temples.
