Oshi Castle

3.9 (200)Historical LandmarkTourist AttractionHistorical PlaceMuseumPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Oshi Castle in Saitams dates back to the late 15th century. It gained fame for withstanding a significant siege during the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. The castle's defense was led by Narita Ujinaga. Despite being surrounded by water and facing a much larger enemy force, it held out for a month.

Today, Oshi Castle is a popular spot for visitors. Its park-like grounds offer beautiful views, especially in spring with cherry blossoms. The reconstructed three-story yagura (turret) gives a glimpse into its past. Inside, exhibits showcase the castle’s history, including samurai armor and weapons.

The Oshi Castle area also includes a museum with local artifacts and displays. Walking around, you can see the remains of the moats and walls, which tell stories of its strategic importance. Oshi Castle is a piece of history nestled in modern-day Saitama, offering both education and enjoyment for those interested in Japan's rich past.

The castle is only three floors and the view is limited. The museum is the main attraction and it’s bigger. The gardens are cute. The words are all in japanese, but is possible to have an audio guide in english (500¥ as a deposit) Entrance fee: 200¥

Another little treasure in Saitama. Not all of the complex is original and most has been rebuilt. The grounds are well kept with many sitting areas to enjoy the views. To enjoy the castle grounds is free but the on site museum building costs ¥200 to enter.

It was closed when I arrived, so couldn't go inside. Finally can only see from the outside. This castle was built on a very large land. The Castle building is still there, standing strong and strong.
