What other travelers are saying about Otaru Art Base
The art exhibition was truly magnificent and breathtaking.
Most of the galleries did not allow photography, which made the viewing experience even more special, as it was my first time seeing the works in person, without having seen them online before.
The staff were very kind and welcoming, making this visit a truly wonderful experience. Highly recommended.
Otaru Art Base is a collection of four different museums, three of them are set around an open green space and courtyard. The fourth museum is canal side.
The museums are the Stained Glass museum, the Former Mitsui Bank Otaru Branch, Nitori Museum of Art and the House of Western art. You buy one ticket, costing ¥2900, that will give you entrance to all four museums.
I really like shopping for souvenirs here, there are various cute and cheap souvenirs available. I almost went crazy buying various souvenirs and skincare for me and my family. The location is very instagrammable, suitable for those who like taking IG photos: @Indra_Isnato
I was expecting a quaint art gallery in a small town but was very surprised. The stained glass, glass and ceramic art and art nouveau peices rival those in tokyo. a gem tiny a day trips off sapporo, would recommend to anyone.
You can purchase individual tickets for each of the four museums or a combined ticket for all galleries: the Venetian Glass Museum, Stained Glass Museum, Antique Toy and Doll Museum, and Art Nouveau and Art Deco Glass Museum. The combined ticket costs less than buying four separate admissions.
Plan for 1.5 to 2 hours to see all four museums. Visiting one or two specific galleries takes less time.
Photography policies vary by gallery. Check the rules at each museum entrance or ask staff before taking photos.
Take the JR Hakodate Main Line from Sapporo, which takes 30 to 40 minutes. From Otaru Station, walk 10 minutes toward the canal district.
