Rainbow Beach, Kagoshima

3.9 (37)BeachNatural FeatureEstablishment

Rainbow Beach in Kagoshima, officially known as Hyakunin Beach or Hyakunin-hama, is a distinctive coastal destination located on the eastern shore of the Satsuma Peninsula. The beach gained its colorful nickname from the multicolored pebbles and stones that wash up along its shoreline, creating a naturally vibrant mosaic effect. These stones, smoothed by volcanic activity and ocean currents, display hues ranging from white and gray to red, green, and black, making the beach a unique geological attraction in southern Kyushu.

The area holds historical significance as part of the broader Kagoshima region, which has been shaped by centuries of volcanic activity from nearby Sakurajima volcano. The volcanic minerals and deposits have contributed to the distinctive coloration of the beach stones, while the surrounding landscape reflects the dramatic geology characteristic of Kagoshima Prefecture. Local communities have long valued the beach as both a natural resource and a scenic spot for relaxation.

Visitors to Rainbow Beach can enjoy collecting the colorful stones as souvenirs, though taking large quantities is discouraged to preserve the natural environment. The beach offers swimming opportunities during warmer months, and the relatively calm waters make it suitable for families. Photography enthusiasts are drawn to the contrast between the multicolored stones, the blue ocean, and the backdrop of mountains and volcanic terrain. Walking along the shoreline provides close-up views of the geological diversity that gives the beach its distinctive character.

Rainbow Beach is accessible by car from central Kagoshima City, approximately 50 kilometers south, with the journey taking around one hour via Route 226. Public transportation options are limited, making a rental car the most practical choice for visitors. The nearest major transport hub is Kagoshima-Chuo Station, from which visitors can arrange car rental. There is no admission fee to access the beach, and parking facilities are available nearby. The beach area has basic amenities but limited facilities, so visitors should come prepared with necessities.

What other travelers are saying about Rainbow Beach, Kagoshima

Avoid this beach(I wouldnt call it a beach tbh)for now - it's a real mess with tons of garbage covering the sand. Not at all ready for swimming or beach activities. Wait until they've had a chance to clean it up properly.

So here is the thing. If you go there early in the afternoon, you will see that the water is not deep and there are scary sea cucumbers/eggplants. As the tide returns in the late afternoon, the water becomes clearer and deeper. Unlike other places that close at 6, you can swim until you are tired. Please don't go early in the afternoon. It is a calm place. The only two people there were me and a friend. I think I like it.

It looks like a swimming beach. Because it was the season, there was not a single person there. Looking along the sandy beach, I could see small fish swimming! Unlike urban beaches, there was almost no trash or other waste and it was very clean!

From Kagoshima, you can easily take a boat to Sakurajima and enjoy swimming right away. It's a small, cozy place, and there aren't many beaches in the world surrounded by a volcano like this one. ... There's a free shower right in front of the public restroom, making it a great place for a quick swim. If you're planning a trip to Kagoshima in the summer, this is a must-visit.
