What other travelers are saying about Roadside Station Awakurando
It’s right next to and high above a running stream. A nice little wooden passage is placed on the side so you can enjoy the nature by walking alongside it.
Another tip: park your car in the secondary parking ground (the one located further north) so that you can enjoy the new restrooms made of fresh woods, unlike I who used the stinky old toilet on the other side of the main building.
The station is located at the border between Okayama and Tottori prefectures, allowing visitors to purchase specialties from both regions. It sits in Nishiawakura Village where 95% of the area is forested. The station features colorful windmills along its corridor and sells fresh vegetables grown with mountain spring water alongside regional products from both prefectures.
By car, the station is near Nishiawakura Interchange on the Tottori Expressway at 418 Kageishi, Nishiawakura Village. By train, take the Chizu Express Line to Nishiawakura Station or Awakura-Onsen Station. From Okayama, transfer at Ohara Station. From Tottori, transfer at Chizu Station.
The station has a restaurant serving local cuisine, a vegetable market with fresh produce from local farmers, and shops selling agricultural products and processed goods. Regional specialties include items from both Okayama and Tottori prefectures. The Awakura Deai Burger is available nearby, combining flying fish from Tottori and Momotaro tomatoes from Okayama.
The village offers protected forest areas with 200 species of trees and hiking courses from 2.6 to 5 kilometers. Awakura Onsen hot springs are located approximately 15 minutes on foot from Awakura-Onsen Station. The village received the Japan Times Excellence Award in 2021 for sustainable forestry initiatives.
