Ryuzu Waterfall

4.2 (200)National ParkTourist AttractionHiking AreaSports Activity LocationParkPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Ryuzu Waterfall is a natural marvel in Nikko National Park. The name “Ryuzu,” meaning “Dragon’s Head,” comes from the way the water cascades down, splitting over a 210-meter-long lava flow, forming what looks like a dragon’s head. This unique formation occurred due to ancient volcanic activity from Mount Nantai, which has shaped the landscape for centuries.

Ryuzu is one of the first waterfalls along the Yukawa River, which originates from Lake Yunoko. The water from the falls eventually flows into Lake Chuzenji, creating a connection between these natural sites. Ryuzu is smaller compared to nearby Kegon Waterfall, but its charm lies in its accessibility and the close-up view it offers.

Autumn is the peak time for visiting Ryuzu Waterfall. The area around the falls is surrounded by dense maple forests, and when the leaves change color, the scene becomes a spectacular display of red, orange, and yellow. This seasonal beauty attracts photographers and nature lovers who seek to capture the vivid landscape.

What other travelers are saying about Ryuzu Waterfall

Very pretty walk. Took the bus up to stop 38 and walked down to stop 37 while taking in the scenery. Stopped to eat lunch at the bottom of the hill for some delicious pork udon. It was much colder here than in Tokyo, so maybe bring a jacket!

Once off bus they are a short walk across the road. There is a path of stairs up behind shops. Good flow and volume of water. I was there spring. Cold up there at that elevation. Not busy. It wasn't the best of days. Overcast but worth the visit if you like nature.

It would be better to alight at bus stop number 38, walk towards the bridge and look at the fantastic view of the lake far away. Then, walk along the staircases to view the flow of the water. If you are the first time visitor and get off at the bus stop 37, you might miss the upstream scenes.

You can walk along the staircase path parallel to Ryuzu Falls, offering stunning views of the cascading water throughout the journey. The scenery becomes even more breathtaking during the autumn season with vibrant foliage enhancing the experience. The path consists mostly of stairs, so it requires some effort, but the rewarding views make it well worth the climb. A must-visit spot for nature lovers!
This is a really beautiful area. The main shop and parking area at the bottom offers the 2 split waterfalls. Weekends during autumn are very busy and parking is hectic but free. If you enjoy a little walk (25 minutes) I suggest you park higher up the road near a bridge. It’s also free parking and you can enjoy the beauty winding river and other waterfalls as you walk down the path towards the base. It’s paved with stairs and lovely foliage on both sides. You will be surrounded by tourists and photographers. Definitely worth visiting as the views are breathtaking.
