Sayamaike Park

Sayamaike Park is a public park surrounding Sayamaike Reservoir in Osakasayama City, Osaka Prefecture. The reservoir has over 1,400 years of history, with construction attributed to the 7th century during Empress Suiko's reign, making it one of Japan's oldest irrigation reservoirs. Built to provide agricultural water for rice cultivation, the reservoir served critical irrigation functions. Major Edo period repairs under civil engineer Katayama Hyoe implemented advanced construction techniques. Modern reinforcement in the 1920s strengthened the earthen dam. The park preserves the historical site while providing recreational green space.

The reservoir and park are a National Historic Site, recognized for ancient and historical dam construction engineering. The Sayamaike Museum displays exhibits on reservoir history, construction methods, archaeological findings, and irrigation infrastructure's role in Japanese agriculture. Visit duration ranges from brief walks to extended leisure.
