What other travelers are saying about Senomoto Kogen Plateau

Hoping to see the beautiful starry sky, I camped in my car in the parking lot of Senomoto Kogen Rest House. I visit Senomoto at least five times a year, but this was my first time camping in my car. I arrived just after 9:30 PM. There were no other people camping in their cars. I had the place to myself. The men's restroom is shared overnight, and both men and women use it. The place is well-maintained and clean. Unfortunately, clouds obscured the view of the beautiful starry sky that day, but there were no other cars around, so I was able to relax until the next morning. The next morning, it was -3°C, and I enjoyed watching the snow fall and the surrounding scenery change. I'll definitely visit again.
March to May offers the freshest green grass following the annual controlled burns in March. Summer provides wildflower blooms and moderate temperatures. Autumn delivers golden landscapes and clear visibility. Winter brings cold conditions and occasional snow but remains accessible.
The plateau is generally safe as it sits on the outer caldera slopes away from the active crater. However, access depends on Mount Aso's current volcanic alert level. Check the Japan Meteorological Agency's volcanic status before visiting and follow all posted restrictions.
Public buses run along the Yamanami Highway but operate infrequently. The journey from Aso Station takes approximately 30 minutes by car. Without your own vehicle, consider organized tours from Kumamoto or Fukuoka, though renting a car provides the most practical access.
The Senomoto Visitor Center has restrooms, educational exhibits, and parking areas. Dining and accommodation options on the plateau are minimal. Bring food or plan to eat in Aso town. Vending machines may be available at the visitor center.
Multiple trails range from easy walks to challenging hikes connecting to the caldera rim. The grassland allows open exploration in some areas, but stay on marked paths to protect the ecosystem and respect grazing lands. Wear proper footwear as terrain can be uneven or muddy.
I like the retro Showa-era feel. They have almost everything you need, and a wide selection of souvenirs.
There are even go-karts outside.
Also, meals come with a main course, salad bar, and drink bar, which is great for families with children.
However, what really hit me hardest was the retro name stickers.

On the way from Daguan Peak to the Jiuchongmeng Grand Suspension Bridge, the scenery along the way was beautiful.
A typical post-forestation mountain scene, with few trees and lush green grass covering the mountains.
Very soothing to look at.
We stopped at this rest stop along the way because we saw a lot of motorcycles gathered there. Riding here must be very enjoyable.
Beautiful scenery, refreshing air.
There is a dog run that can be played in for free. It is separated into large and small dog areas. There seem to be many people who don't know about it yet, so it was almost booked even on weekends. My dog was running around happily under the magnificent scenery.
