Shichiku Garden

Shichiku Garden is a traditional Japanese landscape garden located in Obihiro, Hokkaido's Tokachi region. Established in 1966 by local businessman Masakazu Mori, the garden was designed as a private retreat that would showcase the unique characteristics of Hokkaido's natural environment while incorporating classical Japanese garden principles. The name "Shichiku" translates to "purple bamboo," reflecting the garden's emphasis on creating harmony between cultivated landscapes and native Hokkaido flora.

The garden spans approximately 25,000 square meters and represents a distinctive blend of traditional Japanese garden aesthetics adapted to Hokkaido's climate and ecology. Unlike gardens in warmer regions of Japan, Shichiku Garden features plant species that thrive in northern conditions, including various conifers, deciduous trees that display vibrant autumn colors, and hardy perennials. The garden's design incorporates elements such as a central pond, carefully positioned stones, winding pathways, and strategically placed viewing points that change character with Hokkaido's dramatic seasons—from snow-covered winter landscapes to the fresh greens of spring and the brilliant foliage of autumn.

Visitors can explore the garden's network of walking paths that circle the pond and lead through forested sections, offering different perspectives of the landscape design. The garden is particularly noted for its seasonal transformations, with cherry blossoms in late spring, lush summer greenery, spectacular autumn colors typically peaking in mid-October, and serene snow scenes in winter. A traditional tea house within the grounds provides a space for contemplation and occasional tea ceremonies, though access may be limited depending on the season.

Shichiku Garden is located approximately 3 kilometers from Obihiro Station. Visitors can reach the garden by taxi in about 10 minutes or by local bus, though bus services may be infrequent. Those traveling by car will find parking available on-site. Admission fees apply, with standard adult entry typically around ¥500-800, though rates should be confirmed before visiting as they may vary seasonally.
