Shinobazu Pond is a natural freshwater pond located in Ueno Park in Tokyo's Taito ward, serving as one of the capital's most significant historical and cultural landmarks. The pond originally formed as part of Tokyo Bay before land reclamation separated it from the ocean centuries ago. During the Edo period (1603-1868), the area became closely associated with Bentendo Temple, a small temple dedicated to the goddess Benten that sits on an island in the pond's center, connected to the mainland by a causeway.

The pond covers approximately 11 hectares and is divided into three sections: the boat pond, the lotus pond, and a section dedicated to the Ueno Zoo. Shinobazu Pond holds particular cultural importance as a representation of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture, with Bentendo Temple designed to mirror the famous Chikubushima shrine. The site serves as an important habitat for over 100 species of birds, including migrating waterfowl, making it a designated wildlife protection area within central Tokyo.

Visitors can rent swan-shaped pedal boats and traditional rowboats from March to November for 700-800 yen per 30 minutes. The temple on the central island houses important Buddhist statues and offers traditional omamori (protective charms) and ema (wooden prayer plaques). The surrounding walkways provide excellent views of the Tokyo skyline, while the pond's edges feature numerous benches and small food stalls selling traditional snacks.

The pond transforms dramatically with the seasons, most notably during mid-July to August when thousands of lotus flowers bloom across the lotus pond section, creating a spectacular pink and white carpet. Spring brings cherry blossoms from the surrounding Ueno Park trees, while autumn offers colorful foliage reflections on the water's surface. Winter attracts numerous migratory birds including various duck species, making it popular among birdwatchers and photographers.

Shinobazu Pond is accessible via JR Ueno Station (3-minute walk), Tokyo Metro Ueno Station on the Ginza and Hibiya lines (5-minute walk), or Keisei Ueno Station (4-minute walk). The area is open 24 hours daily with no admission fee, though boat rentals operate from 10:00-17:30 during season. The pond connects seamlessly with other Ueno Park attractions including the Tokyo National Museum, Ueno Zoo, and multiple art museums, making it an ideal starting point for exploring the cultural district.

Traveler reviews

A lovely lake to enjoy a beautiful walk and soak in the general atmosphere of Tokyo ! The area is large enough to spend a whole morning observing the surrounding nature. We even had a nice surprise and spotted a big snake 🐍! To sum it up, this was a wonderful discovery, conveniently located close to various museums and activities. Two French tourists 🇫🇷

Truthfully one of my favorite places in the city now. I like to come here and just relax. Go and you will see why. It's just so nice being able to relax and walk or sit and take in the views. You have that perfect mix of city and gardens that's so nice. It's not too loud either. Plenty of people were reading alone or with others and it just feels really nice. If you are in the area I highly recommend checking this place out. Plenty too do in the park as well
Very enjoyable, peaceful walk with nice views, even in winter. Fairly large pond. Saw lots of different birds. Wish the dust on the bird species list sign was cleaned off so that we can see the photos and names. Would recommend as a short, no-cost tourist activity to do in Ueno Park.
Shinobazu Pond is a famous pond located inside Ueno Park. It is one of the most popular scenic spots in Tokyo and is well known for its beautiful natural views throughout the year. The pond is divided into three sections, including a large area covered with lotus flowers that bloom beautifully in the summer. In the center of the pond, there is a small island with Bentendo Temple, which is dedicated to the goddess Benzaiten. Visitors can enjoy walking around the pond, taking photos, feeding birds, or riding swan-shaped boats on the water. Shinobazu Pond is a peaceful place where people can relax and enjoy nature in the middle of the busy city of Tokyo. 🌸🚣‍♂️🌿
Ueno Park really reminded me a lot of Central Park. The parks in Tokyo are amazing including Yoyogi Park. Me and my daughter tried the paddle boat experience.. it was hard to paddle at first but we really enjoyed just floating around the lake with so many other duck boats! We had a lovely time there!
