I went on April 14th, the last day of the cherry blossom festival, so the Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms were starting to fall, but the one mountain cherry tree I saw was in full bloom. The cherry trees lined the Zao mountain range with the remaining snow. There were also beautiful flowering peach trees, and a cool bamboo and camellia tree along the way... It was so colorful and perfect for a walk. The Nirakami Weir was under construction, but I managed to get a photo of it.
The panoramic view from the nearest bridge makes for some beautiful photos of the Senbonzakura. The wide river and the endless cherry blossoms are truly magnificent and beautiful.
This area is close to the station, so it's bright and beautiful even at night. During cherry blossom season, it's packed with people, even on weekdays.
There are several free parking lots nearby, so if you're visiting by car, it's a good idea to research in advance to ensure smooth access.
There are a few people sitting on the grass or benches eating bento, but there are no groups having cherry blossom viewing parties, so you can enjoy the view in peace and relaxation.
By the way, parking at Funaoka Castle Ruins Park costs 500 yen.
