What other travelers are saying about Shogawa Gorge
Shogawa Gorge, located in Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture, is a magnificent gorge formed by the Shogawa River flowing through the valley, renowned for its distinct natural beauty in all four seasons.
The most popular experience here is the Shogawa Gorge sightseeing boat tour. Visitors can enjoy a boat ride on the calm waters, admiring the cliffs and forest scenery up close.
Seasonal Charms:
Winter: Known as "a world like an ink painting," the banks are covered in deep snow, creating a serene and breathtaking landscape.
Autumn: The mountainsides ablaze with autumn colors, reflected in the lake, making it a famous spot for viewing autumn foliage.
Spring and Summer: Lush greenery and refreshingly pleasant.
Omaki Onsen: Deep within the gorge lies the famous Omaki Onsen hot spring inn. Its most unique feature is that it is inaccessible by road and can only be reached by sightseeing boat, adding to its mystique.
Boat Information: Cruises are typically divided into a "long-distance" route to and from Omaki Onsen (approximately 1 hour) and a "short-distance" route that cruises near Komaki Reservoir (approximately 25 minutes).
Autumn from late October to mid-November is peak season for fall foliage. Spring (April-May) offers cherry blossoms and greenery. Summer provides lush forests. Winter has reduced boat schedules due to weather but offers snowy landscapes when accessible.
The cruise lasts 30 minutes and covers the main scenic section. You'll see rock cliffs, Gan Rock formation, forested slopes, and small waterfalls. Guides provide commentary on geology and history.
Yes. Walking paths exist along portions of the gorge, and Route 156 runs parallel to the river with viewpoints and pullouts. The boat provides water-level perspectives unavailable from land.
From Takaoka Station, take a bus to Gokayama (90 minutes). Similar buses run from Kanazawa. By car, use Route 156 with parking available at Ogimachi Port and scenic overlooks.
The best time to visit is during the autumn foliage season. The best time to see the leaves is around mid-March every year. The number of sightseeing boats is limited, so it's best to check the schedule in advance. If you miss the morning boat, you'll have to wait until the afternoon boat. There are few places to eat lunch nearby, so be careful.
This place is located in a truly remote area. The Shogawa River often becomes polluted due to the many dams built there. Last time, the water was murky, but this time I was able to see the clear Shogawa River. The river is actually incredibly clear. The best time to see its charm is in winter. Especially when there's snow, you can see the Shogawa River at its clearest. At the back is Omaki Onsen.
You do need to be careful though, as there are bears.
This is a children's book by British author Joan G. Robinson. The scenery is reminiscent of "When Marnie Was There" (a Studio Ghibli film), which depicts how Anna, a stubbornly closed-off girl, begins to open up through her interactions with Marnie, a girl who lives in a seaside village. The sightseeing boat ride through the area is truly mystical.
