Early morning or weekdays are less crowded. Weekends and holidays attract more tourists, especially anime fans. Visit during daylight hours as the shrine is in a residential neighborhood.
Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is 15 minutes away on foot. Meiji Jingu Gaien with its ginkgo tree avenue is nearby. Central Shinjuku district is accessible by a short train ride. The National Stadium used in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics is also in the area.
Suga Shrine is famous for appearing in the anime film "Your Name" (Kimi no Na wa). The stone staircase at the shrine was used as the model for a key scene where the main characters meet. Since the film's 2016 release, it has become a pilgrimage site for anime fans who visit to photograph the stairs and see the real-life location.
The shrine holds traditional annual festivals including New Year celebrations and seasonal observances. Events are small-scale and primarily for local parishioners. Specific dates are not widely publicized.
Plan 15 to 30 minutes to climb the staircase, take photos, pray at the worship hall, and browse charms. The shrine grounds are compact with limited area to explore.
Traveler reviews
Went here for the famous stairs, enjoyed the serenity of the shrine. Some groups of tourists taking pictures as well. The neighborhood surrounding the shrine was quiet and peaceful.
It A famous place in Makoto Shinkai's work. Although it is a residential area, it is a place that many tourists visit regardless of time. The area around the shrine is actually where residents live, so it is recommended to keep public morality. The shrine itself is not much to see, so it is better to be immersed in the appreciation while looking at the stairs and then return.
Saw it in TikTok and I wanted to know what the hype was all about. I’m glad I went there as it’s serene and charming. Still now very popular so there were few people around it’s a bit of a walk from the nearest subway station so be ready.
Must visit place for "Your Name" anime fans. Overall it's a beautiful temple. I suggest you avoid visit during peak season and time because it will be crowded.

A little Shinto Shrine and beside it is the famous stairs from the movie Your Name (Kimi no Na wa 君の名は). It’s located in the cosy neighborhood of Yotsuya, Tokyo.
If you come here for the stairs, spend some time at the shrine. They have “Your Name” themed Ema (wooden plaques) here to write your wishes and other Shinto charms too.
I visited early in the morning to avoid the crowds and prayed at the shrine. It was really quiet and peaceful.
