Tatadohama Beach is located near Shimoda at the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The beach stretches for 450 meters along the Pacific coast and is recognized as one of the premier surfing destinations in the region. The Japanese National Surfing Tournament takes place at this location, highlighting its importance in the country's surfing community.

The beach is distinguished by its white sand and transparent water, creating conditions similar to tropical beaches. The scenic mountain backdrop provides a striking contrast to the coastal environment. The shallow, gradually deepening water makes it suitable for families with children, while the consistent wave conditions attract surfers and bodyboarders throughout the season.

Visitors can engage in various water sports, with local shops offering surfboard rentals and lessons. Some instructors are bilingual, accommodating international visitors. Separate areas for surfing and swimming ensure safety, with lifeguards on duty. The beach maintains facilities including warm showers available year-round, bathrooms, a restaurant, and a shop.

Shimoda is accessible from Tokyo via JR limited express Odoriko trains directly, or by taking the Tokaido Shinkansen to Atami Station and transferring to a limited express. From Shimoda Station, buses run to Tatadohama, though taxi service provides a faster alternative. The beach is located approximately 2 kilometers from central Shimoda along the main coastal road. Entry to the beach is free, though equipment rentals and lessons incur separate charges.

Traveler reviews

A small sandy beach that was virtually deserted, but clearly beloved of surfers. There were a few trying the rather small waves. Either end of the beach holds points of interest - a natural tunnel rough the rock to the sea (used for small boat launching) at one end and some wild rock formations and caves at the other. The area isn't built up at all. I was here early April, so off-season.

Small, Clean white sand beach with crystal clear water. Swimming accessories rental shops, restaurant, dressing rooms, restrooms available nearby. Parking is available. Best place for surfers. Rocks are too sharp, better avoid going near them in order not to get hurt.

Great beach, the water is super clear & clean compare to Minami Izu Beach. They also have toilets & you can rent parasols, floats & chairs. The water is a bit cold. BUT one annoying thing : for weather ever reason the beach parking closes at 5PM and the workers starting calling your call at 4:30PM although they know you still have 30minutes to go… Nothing surprising considering we’re in Japan & deinfitely not known to be flexible but weird that a public parking “closes” & that even before sunset! Anyways, at least they allow music & drinking on thsi beach

Beautiful beach. The waves was strong this day and many surfers are there. We were sitting on the concrete parking lot, watching the waves feeling the sea breeze.beautiful memory. I could stay there all day. I climb up the rocks and found private beach on the right but then later I found out on google map it was an actual private beach for the hotel.
