Tatadohama Beach, Shimoda

Tatadohama Beach is located near Shimoda at the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The beach stretches for 450 meters along the Pacific coast and is recognized as one of the premier surfing destinations in the region. The Japanese National Surfing Tournament takes place at this location, highlighting its importance in the country's surfing community.

The beach is distinguished by its white sand and transparent water, creating conditions similar to tropical beaches. The scenic mountain backdrop provides a striking contrast to the coastal environment. The shallow, gradually deepening water makes it suitable for families with children, while the consistent wave conditions attract surfers and bodyboarders throughout the season.

Visitors can engage in various water sports, with local shops offering surfboard rentals and lessons. Some instructors are bilingual, accommodating international visitors. Shimoda is accessible from Tokyo via JR limited express Odoriko trains directly, or by taking the Tokaido Shinkansen to Atami Station and transferring to a limited express. From Shimoda Station, buses run to Tatadohama, though taxi service provides a faster alternative. The beach is located approximately 2 kilometers from central Shimoda along the main coastal road. Entry to the beach is free, though equipment rentals and lessons incur separate charges.
