In the vibrant city of Nagoya, Tokugawa Garden stands as a living testament to Japan's rich cultural heritage. Initially established in 1695 by Tokugawa Mitsutomo, the garden once spanned an expansive 44 hectares and served as a retreat for the Tokugawa clan.

Though the garden suffered significant damage during World War II, it was meticulously restored and reopened in 2004, preserving its historical charm. Today, Tokugawa Garden is a captivating blend of natural beauty and historical significance.

Visitors are greeted by the iconic Kuro-Mon, the Black Gate, which leads to a serene landscape featuring a central pond filled with vibrant koi, scenic waterfalls, and lush greenery. The garden's pathways invite exploration, with highlights including the Ryumon No Taki Waterfall and the elegant Zuiryutei Teahouse, where traditional tea ceremonies are held.

What other travelers are saying about Tokugawa Garden

Tokugawa Park is a lovely, quaint spot to enjoy both historical landmarks and beautiful views. During our visit, there was a 200 yen fee to access just the lake area, with additional fees depending on which parts of the park you'd like to explore. The weather was pleasant and calm, and we even witnessed a beautiful Japanese wedding taking place at a house by the lake, which appeared to be a reception venue. The park also features vibrant flowers, a charming man-made waterfall, and a cute souvenir shop. Overall, I’d definitely visit again, especially since there weren’t many tourists around.

Hands down one of the most beautiful place I've ever visited in my life. At first, I wasn't sure whether I should visit or not since it's winter time, but I didn't regret my choice to go here. I bought a combined ticket with the Tokugawa Art Museum. If you only want to go to the garden, it's quite cheap and only cost you 300 yen. This is a must-visit place if you go to Nagoya.

Even in the winter it's so beautiful! Make sure to go into the paid portion of the park, the waterfall is must see! It's only a few hundred yen. Worth every yen

Gorgeous garden alongside the Tokugawa Art Museum. We went right after sunset and at night with the ambient lightning, it was beautiful. Great for solo tourists, couples or groups.

A cozy park. Although it's not very large, it's quite exquisite. You can take your time to explore and enjoy it leisurely.
