The Tonbori River Cruise offers visitors a unique 20-minute water-level perspective of Osaka's most famous entertainment district, Dotonbori. The Dotonbori River traces its origins to 1612, when entrepreneur Nariyasu Doton began excavating the canal on the southern edge of Osaka to increase commerce in the region. Following Doton's death during the Siege of Osaka in 1615, the project was completed by associates Yasui Kuhē and Hirano Tōjirō, with the finished waterway named "Dotonbori" in honor of its visionary founder. From the Edo period through the early Showa era, the area along the river flourished as a world-renowned theater district, home to the "Five Theaters of Dotonbori" featuring kabuki and bunraku puppet performances.

The cruise experience features entertaining commentary from Osaka guide crew members, often including Rakugo storytelling comedians who provide cultural insights about the district's history while passengers pass under nine distinctive bridges. The boat travels from east to west along the Dotonbori River, offering unobstructed views of the famous Glico running man sign above Ebisubashi Bridge, the giant moving crab billboard of Kani Dōraku restaurant, and the spectacular array of neon advertisements that create Osaka's signature urban theater. The open-type boats operate in light rain with provided raincoats, though umbrellas are prohibited due to low bridge clearances and safety concerns.

The boarding location is at Tazaemonbashi Pier, directly in front of the Don Quijote Dotonbori store on the north bank of the Tonbori River Walk promenade.
