What other travelers are saying about Toroki Falls
Even though Yakushima is home to many waterfalls, this one of the rare places in Japan where a waterfall flows directly into the ocean is one of the rarest. π§
The entrance is across the road from Pon-Tan-kan.
Many people park their cars at Pon-Tan-kan, so be careful when crossing the road. ποΈ
A 2-3 minute walk will take you to a spot where you can overlook the falls, but it's narrower than you'd expect. lol
If it's crowded, it might be best to move quickly and take photos. lol
We went there because it's one of only two waterfalls in Japan that falls into the sea. The waterfall itself is small and the only unusual thing about it is that it falls into the sea! However, the view created by the blue of the sea and sky, the green of the mountains, the red of the bridge, and Mt. Mochomu towering in the background is spectacular.
Looking from the red bridge, you can't see the waterfall, but the color of the sea beyond is beautiful.
Incidentally, the name Toroki is apparently derived from the word "todoroki" (roar).
According to a Kagoshima tourism website, Toroki Falls, located at the mouth of the Koino River, is "one of only two waterfalls in Japan that fall into the sea." Parking is available in the spacious car park at Pontankan across the road, from where it is about a three-minute walk. The path is well-maintained up the middle, but the path is a little rough at the end, so sneakers are recommended. From the observation deck, you can see the waterfall cascading directly from the river into the sea, the red bridge, and Mt. Mochomu with its exposed rocks in the background. On your way back from seeing the waterfall, we recommend "Pontankan's passion fruit shaved ice"!
Surrounded by the beautiful nature of Yakushima, Toroki Falls is a scenic spot that captivates all visitors. This waterfall has the unusual feature of having river water flow directly into the sea, allowing visitors to enjoy the exquisite scenery of the sea and waterfall interwoven together.
The waterfall is surrounded by lush greenery, and on sunny days in particular, the light reflects off the water's surface, creating a mystical atmosphere. There is also a walking path, making it easily accessible and recommended for families and couples.
Another attraction is the way the waterfall changes appearance depending on the season and time of day. It is truly a spectacular sight.
Yes, there are several hiking trails that lead to and around the falls. The trails vary in difficulty, so make sure to choose one that suits your fitness level.
The falls may be challenging for those with mobility issues due to the uneven terrain and stairs along the trails. There are some viewpoints that are more accessible, but the full experience requires some hiking.
There arenβt designated picnic areas at the falls, but there are some scenic spots along the nearby trails or within a short distance. Be sure to follow Leave No Trace principles and pack out any trash.
