The Uheyama Rice Terraces are located in Asago City, Hyogo Prefecture, in the northern Tajima region of Japan. These terraced rice paddies were carved into the mountainside over centuries by local farmers adapting to the steep terrain, creating a distinctive agricultural landscape that has been maintained for generations. The terraces represent traditional Japanese mountain farming techniques passed down through rural communities in this region.

The site gained recognition when it was selected as one of Japan's "100 Best Rice Terraces" by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The terraces are particularly valued for their scenic beauty and as a living example of sustainable agriculture in mountainous areas. The landscape changes dramatically with the seasons: spring brings water-filled paddies that reflect the sky, summer shows vibrant green rice plants, autumn presents golden harvests, and winter occasionally covers the terraces in snow.

Visitors come primarily to photograph the terraces and experience the rural mountain atmosphere. The best viewing period is typically from late April to early May when the paddies are flooded and reflect the surrounding mountains and sky, creating mirror-like surfaces. Autumn, around September to October, offers views of golden rice ready for harvest. Several observation points provide panoramic views of the terraced slopes. The area remains an active farming community, so visitors should respect private property and agricultural activities.

Access to Uheyama Rice Terraces requires private transportation, as public transport options are limited. The site is approximately 90 minutes by car from central Kobe or about 50 minutes from Kinosaki Onsen, a popular hot spring resort town. From JR Yabu Station on the San'in Main Line, the terraces are roughly 20 minutes by taxi. There is no admission fee to view the terraces, as they are working agricultural land and observation points are accessible from public roads.

Traveler reviews

The snow-covered rice terraces of Ueyama can be seen from the side of the road, which has been narrowed due to snow removal. Cars can be parked in the widened area.

Seeing the terraced rice fields nestled in the mountains of Tajima, I felt I caught a glimpse of the ingenuity of the people who have built a long history in this area. There are many other terraced rice fields besides these, and it would be worthwhile to visit them all. Furthermore, there are valleys, waterfalls, and various observation decks in the vicinity, so you can fully enjoy the nature of Tajima.
The road is a little narrow and goes through the mountains, but it's more than wide enough for one lane, so as long as you drive safely there's no problem! I wanted to see the scenery reflected in the water's surface, but it seemed it was still too early when I visited. The ridges had been neatly mowed and it was clear that the area was carefully maintained. Please enjoy the scenery without getting in the way of the people working! Thank you.
The Ueyama rice terraces are surrounded by mountains. When water enters the rice fields, the mountains and sky are reflected in the beautiful scenery. These terraces are smaller than those in Betsumiya. Also, because they are surrounded by mountains, you might see hawks flying nearby. On this day, the sky was cloudy and the water was still entering the fields. It would be nice to visit after Golden Week. The parking lot is just a pull-up and can accommodate about three cars. Please note that there are no restrooms. The road is also only one lane. Please drive carefully.
In mid-July, seeing the terraced rice fields here, and if you have time, walking along the road to Yoshitaki waterfall is one possible route. The green is only there for a moment; afterwards, the surrounding weeds were meticulously removed, one by one, like shaving. Whether it's better to have clearly defined rice paddy outlines, or to have a vast expanse of green like this, depends on the careful work done by those involved. A beautiful village. Thank you.
