It feel like you stepped into a mysterious and sacred place surrounded by lush greenery and moss covered stone statues and lanterns. It was exactly the quiet and beautiful cedar forest I was looking for in Yakushima.
To access, there is a small sign by the road entrance, then there is a narrow unpaved road on the left that can only fit one car. By the Shrine entrance, there are parking space for 2 to 3 cars at most.
Its an amazing sacred place honouring the mountain gods.
Nobody around but late summer insects, mountain birds, wind through the woods, and sunshine rain on the leaves. Sit on the nice little bench and have a moment to yourself. Feel the presence of the spirit of the mountain and the sea.
Extremely small. Nothing decorative or grandiose, not much carvings or decent sculptures. Just overpowering nature being part of local worship, but that is unique enough. If you are interested in the mountain and sea rituals of the local people, this is a must see.
