Utsunomiya Zoo

Utsunomiya Zoo opened on April 6, 1969 in the northern part of Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture. The zoo operates under the concept of "Nature, Animals, and Children," emphasizing interactive experiences where visitors can have close contact with animals. The facility houses approximately 400 animals representing 90 species, making it a moderate-sized zoo focused on hands-on education rather than extensive collections.

The zoo's educational philosophy centers on teaching children that different communication rules apply to each animal, helping them cultivate emotional connections through direct sensory experiences beyond what picture books can provide. The animal collection includes ferocious species such as Amur tigers and lions, herbivores including giraffes and elephants, as well as monkeys, birds, reptiles, and small animals. Notable residents include white tigers, European lynx, chimpanzees, porcupines, black bears, and capybaras.

The main attraction is the opportunity to feed and interact with animals directly. Visitors can purchase animal feed exclusively from the zoo to feed giraffes and elephants, experiencing the size and warmth of these large mammals up close. Nakayoshi Land provides opportunities to touch smaller animals like rabbits and guinea pigs. For Asian elephants, hippopotamuses, and penguins, zookeepers provide guided tours, and guests can feed elephants directly on their trunks with guide assistance. The zoo holds special "Animal Day" events on the 20th of every month, featuring activities such as making paper from elephant dung and elephant physical examinations.

An amusement park is attached to the zoo, offering family entertainment with a Ferris wheel, lion roller coaster, and various rides. Attractions include the "Rock 'n' Roll" pendulum ride, "Sky Balloon," go-karts, and other features that maintain a retro atmosphere. Seasonal facilities include a children's pool open during summer and a trout fishing pond operating in winter.

Admission fees are ¥1,500 for adults (junior high school students and older) and ¥700 for children (ages 3 to elementary school students). Group discounts are available for parties of 15 or more people. Children aged 0-2 can enter free of charge, and visitors are prohibited from bringing outside food for animals.

The zoo is located at 552-2 Kamikanaimachi, Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture. By car, the facility is approximately five minutes from Utsunomiya IC. For public transportation, visitors should take the Line 8 bus (bound for Sanno-danchi, Nikko, Ishinada, or Funao) from the west exit of JR Utsunomiya Station and alight at Shimokanai bus stop, followed by a 5-minute walk. Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture's most populous city, is approximately one hour from Tokyo by Shinkansen and serves as a major transportation hub.
