Yubatake Souan is a 3.5-star hotel strategically positioned directly across from the famous Yubatake hot water field in Kusatsu, one of Japan's three most renowned hot spring destinations alongside Gero and Arima. This well-appointed accommodation serves as the perfect base for exploring Kusatsu Onsen, offering guests immediate access to the steaming geothermal spectacle that feeds the town's numerous public baths.

The hotel uniquely combines Western comfort with traditional Japanese aesthetics, featuring Western-style rooms with beds while maintaining authentic cultural elements. The property's standout feature is its ashiyu cafe, where visitors can enjoy refreshments while soaking their feet in naturally heated footbaths, creating a distinctly Japanese relaxation experience.

The hotel's location directly across from Yubatake makes it an ideal base for exploring the surrounding area. The property offers both meal-inclusive and room-only accommodation plans, catering to travelers who prefer to explore local cuisine independently. Additional amenities include free WiFi, air conditioning, in-room refrigerators, and safety deposit boxes.

Kusatsu is easily accessible by train and bus connections from major Japanese cities. The nearest major transportation hub is Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station on the JR Agatsuma Line, followed by a bus journey to Kusatsu Onsen. The hotel is centrally located within walking distance of Yubatake and Sainokawara Park. No admission fees apply for accessing the hotel's public areas, though accommodation rates vary by season and room type. Nearby attractions include the Kusatsu Town Onsen Museum and Sainokawara Park, both within easy walking distance of the property.

Traveler reviews

Spent a night here in one of their rooms with private outdoor bath. The water quality was very good. Location is prime - right by the yubatake and across the famous onsen water show. Entrance is easy to miss - small alleyway with a narrow path that lead to a smaller and quieter foot bath by the reception. The facilities are a bit dated and you can pick up people walking and chatting outside your room fairly easily. This is expected due to the wooden structure of the building. Be ware of that if you are a light sleeper. Private outdoor bath was great with average view. Water temp was perfect and I had a great rest. Breakfast was provided with limited western selections. I am ok with that, not a big eater in the morning anyways. Checkout time was 10am, rather than the most common 11am for other hotels. Overall I am happy with the stay but for 41000 yen room rate, I would most likely opt for a regular room next time.

Good: 1) perfect location in front of Yubatake Onsen, with a magical steamy view. 2) the staff was great. respectful, helpful, and spoke English. Bad: 1) breakfast was extremely awful! I preferred 7-eleven across the street. 2) outdated interior, terrible bed, and noisy hallways, hard to sleep. 3) our room had no view blocked by a building, and dim lighting made the room feel depressing. we only used it for sleep. (apparently they only had 2 rooms with view of Yubatake onsen which was full)
The room was clean and very spacious with a really comfortable bed. The location is excellent as the hotel is right in the center of town opposite the yubatake. It was nice to put on a yukata and take a walk around in the evening. The breakfast was really quite good with a decent choice. The water in the bath was nice quality, but the bath itself was quite small. It would be nicer if there were more towels in the room. Admittedly I was a single traveler but there was only a single bath towel and face towel.
The front lobby is next to the foot bath. My room didn’t have a shower or bath so we had to use the public bath. From 1am-5am you can use the private baths without a reservation. Also this hotel gives you a free ticket for another onsen at their sister hotel:) it’s a great location right in the middle of the town.
A lovely little cafe, a little Hiden between two buildings but offering some unique snacks and a lovely foot hot spring. Is a little small if you have lots of luggage but they do provide lockers.
