ACAO FOREST (Acao Herb & Rose Garden) is a 12.5-hectare botanical garden located on the clifftops of Atami in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. Originally established in 1982 as a herb garden, the attraction was expanded and redesigned in 2018 by world-renowned landscape designer Dan Pearson to create a more naturalistic garden that blends seamlessly with the surrounding coastal landscape.

The garden sits 300 meters above sea level overlooking Sagami Bay and offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and nearby islands. Its terraced design features over 300 varieties of roses alongside Mediterranean herbs, ornamental grasses, and native Japanese plants. The garden's cultural significance lies in its representation of contemporary Japanese garden design philosophy, which emphasizes harmony between cultivated and wild landscapes while incorporating international botanical expertise.

Visitors can explore winding pathways that lead through themed garden areas including the Rose Terrace, Herb Garden, and Wild Garden. The on-site COEDA HOUSE, a distinctive wooden pavilion designed by architect Kengo Kuma, serves as a café and observation deck offering spectacular ocean views. The garden also features a shop selling herbs, roses, and garden-related products, plus workshops on herb cultivation and botanical crafts.

The optimal visiting season runs from May to October, with roses reaching peak bloom in May and June and again in October. Spring brings cherry blossoms and fresh herb growth, while summer offers lush Mediterranean vegetation. Autumn provides clear mountain views and comfortable temperatures, though winter visits are possible with reduced plant displays and shorter operating hours.

ACAO FOREST is accessible via JR Tokaido Line to Kinomiya Station, followed by a 15-minute taxi ride or local bus service. From Tokyo, the journey takes approximately 1.5 hours. The garden opens daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with last entry at 4:30 PM. Adult admission costs ¥1,200, with discounts available for seniors, students, and children. Parking is available on-site for 300 yen per vehicle. The facility is partially wheelchair accessible, though some steep pathways may present challenges for mobility-impaired visitors.

What other travelers are saying about Acao Forest (Acao Herb & Rose Garden)

If you’re looking for a peaceful escape that feels like stepping into a dreamy European classical garden, ACAO FOREST in Atami is an absolute must-visit. This sprawling flower-themed park is nothing short of magical. No matter the season, the grounds are bursting with color: roses, hydrangeas, herb gardens, and countless other flowers and trees carefully arranged across rolling hills. It genuinely feels like a painting from the Romantic era come to life; elegant, serene, and incredibly photogenic. Walking along the winding paths, with the ocean breeze and the scent of flowers all around, is pure bliss. One of the best parts is how comfortable and relaxing the whole experience feels. The paths are well-maintained, there are plenty of benches to sit and soak it all in, and the layout encourages you to take your time. It never feels crowded, even on weekends, which adds to that cozy, almost private-garden vibe. After strolling around, head to the open-air café perched on the hillside. Grab a coffee, find a seat on the terrace, and just gaze out at the stunning panoramic view of Atami and Sagami Bay. On clear days, the ocean sparkles below, and it’s honestly one of the most relaxing spots I’ve ever sat in. Before leaving, make sure to stop by COEDA, the park’s stylish restaurant. The food is fresh, seasonal, and beautifully presented; my plate of colorful roasted vegetables with herbs from the garden was almost too pretty to eat. Light, flavorful, and perfectly in tune with the natural surroundings. The only minor downside is the location; it’s about 20-25 minutes by car from central Atami, tucked away on the coast. But don’t let that put you off! There’s a bus that runs regularly from Atami Station, so getting there is hassle-free. Highly recommended!

On the Atami hillside overlooking the Sagami Bay is a a gem of a spot where nature is nurtured to bloom. The acao forest is a collection of 12 themed gardens, art installations, shrines and one of the most stunning views of the bay especially on a clear sunny day. It is best arrive here by car and there is ample parking. Tickets can be purchased at the entrance but u save yourself 20% with an online purchase of 2000Y for entry. I recommend taking the shuttle to the top of the hill side and slowly make your way down by foot to enjoy all the gardens. At the top, it is a short hike to visit the shrine, the land art park and some of the gardens. The whole area is fun to explore and don’t forget your camera as the various cliff side views, swings, seats make for great pictures. Even in the midst of winter where the bloom is at its lowest it made for a great day out. There is a cafe cum cocktail bar near the summit and a lovely Italian restaurant at the base. Both are worth a visit just for a meal with a view!

**Land Art Park ACAO Forest** is a breathtaking hillside park perfect for sightseeing and relaxation. Spanning a vast area, it’s adorned with blooming flowers and whimsical props ideal for photo opportunities. Despite its size, the park features a convenient shuttle bus service, making it easy to explore. I recommend visiting the park before noon for the best lighting; I arrived at 3:30 PM and found the photos lacking in brightness. Fortunately, as the sun began to set, the sky transformed into a beautiful pink hue, creating a stunning backdrop for my pictures. I also had the pleasure of visiting **COEDA House**, a café designed by the renowned architect Kengo Kuma. The structure elegantly mimics the shape of a tree, harmonizing perfectly with the surrounding landscape. I enjoyed a delightful cake and coffee there, making for a truly pleasant afternoon. Overall, ACAO Forest is a must-visit for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts alike!

When I was there in May, the rose was blooming. So pretty!! We took the shuttle bus to the top, but I enjoyed it more on the walk from the top to the entrance.
