What other travelers are saying about Byodo-in Temple
Byodo-in Temple is truly stunning and peaceful. As an important site of Pure Land Buddhism, the whole place feels calm and spiritual, especially with the Phoenix Hall reflected in the pond.
I have also visited Jingtu Temple in Datong, Shanxi, which is also related to Pure Land Buddhism. Even though they are far apart, I could feel a similar serene and sacred atmosphere between these two ancient temples. It was a very special cross-cultural experience.
The grounds are well-maintained, and the whole visit was wonderful. Highly recommended for anyone who loves history, culture, and beautiful architecture.
It is famous for its Phoenix Hall (Hoo-do), which symbolizes the Buddhist Pure Land and is featured on the Japanese 10-yen coin. The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage site, part of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto".
Visitors can explore the Phoenix Hall, admire its Amida Buddha statue, and see the temple's collection of art and artifacts in the Hoshokan Museum. The temple gardens are also a significant attraction.
It is open all year round, the best time during the cherry blossom season in spring. However, its beauty can be appreciated in every season.
Photography restrictions may apply, especially inside the Phoenix Hall and museum areas, to preserve the tranquility and condition of the artifacts and interiors. Always check the current policy upon your visit.
Nearby attractions include green tea shops in Uji, Ujigami Shrine, Kosho-ji Temple, Mount Daikichi, and other cultural and historical sites.
A beautiful temple in Uji that overlooks a small pond. I liked the contrast between the traditional architecture of the temple and the more modern look of the museum. I didn't pay to enter the Phoenix Hall, though your ticket also grants you access to the museum so you can still see what it looks like.
I visited this place a few days ago during my stay in Kyoto, and it was absolutely beautiful even in winter. Every corner was full of charming details that made me stop and admire it. They also have a museum inside but photos aren’t allowed, which honestly makes the experience feel more special but you can pick up some lovely souvenirs at the end to bring the memories home with you 🤗.
I would happily come back here again, especially for the incredible matcha in Uji. It’s the kind of place that stays in your mind and makes you want to return.
It’s an OK temple… I go to Inari temple in Kyoto the day before so when the next day I go to this temple it’s a pretty ‘meh’ experience.
Inari is so big and beautiful but it’s free, while this temple is much smaller and not as impressive but cost you 700yen per person (02/2026)
The free museum inside is good but many description are in Japanese, I hope they add English as well
Visiting Byōdō-in Temple 平等院 was a very beautiful and memorable experience. The moment you see the Phoenix Hall reflecting on the surface of the pond, it feels like a classic scene from a Japanese painting. The elegant architecture and the calm water together create a peaceful atmosphere that is easy to enjoy.
Walking around the temple grounds feels very relaxing, with well-kept gardens and gentle pathways that invite you to slow down and appreciate the surroundings. The combination of nature and history makes the visit enjoyable, and every angle offers a different, picturesque view.
The museum inside is also interesting, and it helps you understand more about the temple’s history and its cultural importance. The detailed artwork and the Phoenix ornaments are especially impressive and show the fine craftsmanship of the period.
Overall, Byōdō-in Temple is a wonderful place to visit if you appreciate quiet, beautiful scenery and traditional Japanese architecture. It leaves a calm and lasting impression. 🌿✨
