Daigo-ji Temple

4.3 (200)Tourist AttractionPlace Of WorshipPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Daigo-ji Temple is a historic spot in Kyoto, Japan, full of beauty and rich with tales from the past. Built in 874 by Rigen Daishi, it sits on Mount Daigo and is part of a large temple complex. This UNESCO World Heritage site has stunning gardens, ancient structures, and sacred halls.

The Five-Story Pagoda, over a thousand years old, is one of the main highlights, standing as Kyoto’s oldest surviving building. During cherry blossom season, the temple becomes a popular place, with the grounds filled with pink blooms. The Reihokan Museum on-site holds many treasures, like statues and paintings, showing the temple’s long history.

Daigo-ji Temple has strong ties to the famous Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a key figure in Japanese history, who hosted a grand cherry blossom viewing party here in 1598. Visitors today can still feel the echoes of that celebration. The temple offers a mix of peace and historical depth, providing a glimpse into Japan’s rich cultural heritage.

What other travelers are saying about Daigo-ji Temple

Third visit to Kyoto, but first time here and I regret not coming here earlier. The grounds are vast, so even with a few school groups, you will still feel alone in the gardens to enjoy the peacefulness. The autumn colors are slowly starting to show, although the temperature is still too high for the time of year. No doubt cherry blossom season here would be breathtaking, judging from all the weeping sakura trees on the grounds.

The most beautiful Japanese gardens I've seen in Japan yet. I went on a weekday and I was alone there. You don't need to pay the extra 500 yen to get deeper into this house though (where the garden is), it's redundant. Also the pagoda in the other area is beautiful. However, when I visited there were a lot of trees being cut down (from what I gathered they were damaged in a storm or something like that) so there was a lot of noise from that, unfortunately. Still, I would highly recommend this place!

My favourite place in Kyoto! Visited in October and there were only a handful of people around, which made it really special to explore. The beauty around the premises is serene, unlike any other of the previous temples and gardens I visited in Japan.

Beautiful place. Definitely attempt to go here early morning to avoid the crowds. We arrived here at 9am and stayed for 2 hours. The entire experience was like a personal tour for ourselves with no outside noise like every other temple in Japan. Perhaps we got lucky, but this place is definitely amplified by the seasons - lucky folks might get the infamous red leaves during the fall!

Ignora the other reviews. The garden is nice and it's more than 2 minutes and you can get a lot of history there. The garden is also now included in the price to go see the other section of the area. When we arrived there was a lot of parking available and it is a paid parking lot. They're optional hiking trails if you want to do that. We didn't hike and we probably spent about 1 and 1/2 to 2 hours here. This area is absolutely gorgeous and we highly recommend it.
