What other travelers are saying about Eikando Zenrin-ji
Our guide told us this is one of the best places to see Autumn 🍁 colours. The temple is unique for Amida Buddha statue looking back over its shoulder , unlike any other Budda statue in Japan.
We took off our shoes in placed them in a bag and walked around the temple to learn more about it, photography inside isn't allowed.
The outside garden is beautiful and filled with red and orange 🍁 leaves.
The highlight is a pond with the reflection of the autumn leaves and a bright red Koi fish in it.
Loved the temple complex.
They say this where to see the beautiful autumn foliage in Kyoto aside from Kiyomizu-dera 🙂 some other maple trees are in full bloom others are all withered. They have a special event for autumn. It’s really best to visit the temple a few hours before closing as there were fewer crowds and I’ve witnessed a monk ringing some ceremonial bells for a few minutes.
I got to climb the pagoda too and see the beautiful golden sky of Kyoto city. I really enjoyed my stay here as I’m flying back to my country the next morning. I would love to visit again! 🌸
Visiting Eikan-dō 永観堂 in Kyoto was a truly memorable experience. The temple grounds are spacious and beautifully arranged, and every step feels like walking into a quiet painting. The pathways, trees, moss, ponds, and traditional buildings all blend so well together that you naturally slow down and enjoy each moment.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons, but Eikan-dō is especially famous for its autumn colors. When the leaves turn deep red and golden orange, the entire temple looks almost unreal—like a landscape painting brought to life. Even in other seasons, the subtle greens and soft natural light give the gardens a peaceful charm.
One of the most enjoyable moments was simply standing still and looking at the reflections in the pond; the scene looks perfectly composed, as if nature and architecture were designed together from the beginning. There are many viewpoints where you feel like the scenery in front of you could be framed as art.
Walking around Eikan-dō gives a calm feeling and allows you to appreciate not only the beauty of the temple itself but also the atmosphere of traditional Kyoto. It’s a place where nature, culture, and quietness all come together in a very harmonious way. I felt like I was looking at paintings everywhere I turned, and the experience stays beautifully in your memory even after leaving. 🌿✨
One of my favorites temple visit because of the momiji illumination night view. I walked from Nanzenji temple for around 5 minutes or so before reavhing to Eikando temple. However had to wait for half an hour because the night illumination is only open from 5.30pm onwards, the queue was quite long since it is a famous night illumination spot. Needless to say, the view is really enchanting at night, despite being at night you can still see the vibrant colors of the leaves. Do brace the cold if you go in Dcember though. I had a great experience here and would recommend everyone to pay a visit during peak momiji season.
The super colour temple. You take your shoes off and go through the whole complex, which was a very rare experience, and then you can take a walk around the outside of it. And there these color flags/sunshades everywhere making it look even more interesting. Gardens are amazing during autumn/mid+ November.
