Ikoma Sanjo Amusement Park

Ikoma Sanjo Amusement Park sits at the summit of Mount Ikoma at an elevation of 642 meters, straddling the border between Nara and Osaka prefectures. Opened in 1929, this historic amusement park is the only one in Nara Prefecture and has been entertaining visitors for nearly a century. The park's location provides temperatures 3 to 5 degrees cooler than the plains below, making it particularly popular during summer months.

The park's most significant attraction is the Flying Tower, a 30-meter-high ride that stands as Japan's oldest existing large-scale amusement ride. Having operated continuously since the park's opening, this iconic attraction offers panoramic views from 20 meters above ground, providing visitors with a 360-degree vista of both the Osaka Plain and Nara Basin. On clear days, the view extends to Osaka Bay, Kobe, Kansai Airport, and even the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge.

Visitors can experience the park's 27 different attractions and 5 game areas, most designed for families with young children. The Cycle Monorail allows guests to pedal through the air in animal-themed cars while enjoying aerial views of the landscape. The Pukapuka Panda monorail circles the park in adorable panda gondolas, offering a relaxing tour of the grounds. Other attractions include the Kurukuru Rollercoaster, Gold Rush water slide, go-karts, miniature golf, and indoor games. The park also features PLAY PEAK ITADAKI, an elevated playground area requiring an additional fee where children can play in nature. The Ikomayama View Restaurant offers terrace seating with sweeping views of the Osaka Plain, serving meals including the popular View Lunch.

Admission to the park is free, though individual ride tickets or unlimited ride passes must be purchased to enjoy the attractions. On-site parking is available for 1,500 yen per day. Coin lockers are located under the Cycle Monorail and in the game corner area. The park accepts VISA and Mastercard credit cards, as well as PayPay, ALIPAY, and WeChatPay for digital payments at select locations, though restaurants, parking, and ticket machines remain cash-only. Visitors are welcome to bring their own food and drinks for a picnic-style experience.

To reach the park, take the Kintetsu Railway to Ikoma Station, accessible in approximately 20 minutes from either Osaka Namba Station or Kintetsu Nara Station. From Ikoma Station, walk three minutes to Toriimae Station and board the historic Ikoma Cable Car, featuring charming dog, cat, and cake-shaped cars. The journey requires a transfer at Hozanji Station to the Sanjo Line, with the total cable car ride taking approximately 15 to 16 minutes to reach Ikoma Sanjo Station at the summit. The cable car itself dates to 1918, making it Japan's first commercial cable car operation.
