The Nunobiki Herb Gardens are much more than just a botanical garden. While the beautifully maintained flowers and herb collections are certainly the main attraction, the entire complex offers a full day of sightseeing, scenic viewpoints, dining, and leisurely walks that make it one of Kobe's most rewarding destinations.
One of the highlights is the Ropeway, which takes visitors all the way to the summit. Although it's possible to hike up, the climb is entirely uphill and can easily take an hour or more—longer if you stop to rest along the way. The ropeway isn't cheap, but it's well worth the price for the time it saves and, more importantly, for the spectacular panoramic views of Kobe, the surrounding mountains, and the lush forests below.
At the upper station, you'll find far more than just gardens. There are souvenir shops, several restaurants and cafés, a fragrance-themed museum, an event or performance hall, and beautifully landscaped areas where you can relax and enjoy the surroundings before beginning your descent.
Rather than taking the ropeway straight back down, I highly recommend walking to Kaze no Oka Station instead. Since the route is downhill, it's an easy and pleasant stroll, and you'll encounter numerous attractions along the way. There are themed gardens, scenic rest areas, and the impressive Glass House, which features a café and some of the best views overlooking the city. Following the walking route shown on the park map allows you to experience nearly everything the gardens have to offer before boarding the ropeway back to the base station.
Overall, this is one of Kobe's standout attractions. Whether you're interested in flowers, photography, architecture, or simply enjoying spectacular views of the city and mountains, the Nunobiki Herb Gardens offer something for everyone. I highly recommend setting aside at least half a day to fully appreciate everything this beautiful place has to offer.
The Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens & Ropeway is definitely worth visiting for the breathtaking panoramic views of Kobe. It’s an ideal place to take a leisurely walk, relax, and enjoy nature. The attraction is especially popular for its scenic ropeway and seasonal flowers.
The admission fee is on the expensive side, so it may not be the best value if you’re mainly interested in the gardens alone. We also tried the food at the café, but it was fairly average and nothing particularly memorable. The real highlight here is the spectacular scenery rather than the dining experience.
Overall, if you’re looking for beautiful views, a relaxing atmosphere, and great photo opportunities, the Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens & Ropeway is absolutely worth visiting. Just come for the scenery, and you’ll have a wonderful time.
Very nice little getaway from the city!
We travelled from Osaka for a day trip which was about 60 minutes by train, then another 25 minutes walk from the station to the ropeway, but a very casual easy walk.
The ropeway itself was really nice and through some nice green gardens. The view from the ride up the hill is really nice and overlooks the ports.
We did the walk down the hill and stopped at the top for a drink and again at the greenhouse part way down. Amazing views of Kobe and some really nice icecreams. The gardens themselves are very well maintained and nice to stroll through.
If you're walking back down, be warned that it's a bit of a walk and has a lot of stairs so not recommended if you have knee issues. There arent places to stop so once you start you've committed to the whole walk.
Would recommend visiting but wouldn't do the walk on peak summer or if you're not confident in your fitness.
What an amazing, old world, stylish and unique place! There are various gardens, aroma museums, and cafes. It is a beautiful floral masterpiece of an experience. Even though it was busy, I did not get overwhelmed, as the flowers were so calming. The herb garden is free of you hike/walk to the mansion, otherwise it cost money for the funicular to get up to the top of the mountain by the herb mansion. There are greenhouses with really neat and indicate sitting areas.
Wow, this was amazing! One of the highlights of our Japan trip. Would really recommend a trip to Kobe just to do this. Stunning views, really lovely garden centre and we did the hike all the way down. So beautiful. Food was tasty, although a little more expensive than usual but to be expected. Staff were friendly. Gondola on the way up was picturesque. Beautiful and well maintained.
