Kozushima Lighthouse

Kozushima Lighthouse stands as a beacon on the southern cliffs of Kozushima, one of Tokyo's volcanic Izu Islands located approximately 180 kilometers south of the metropolis. Constructed in 1951, the lighthouse is positioned 120 meters above sea level and stands 12 meters high. The structure serves as both a navigational aid for vessels and a popular viewpoint for visitors exploring this remote island paradise.

The lighthouse holds particular significance as part of Mount Tenjo's hiking network, one of the island's most popular trekking routes. Local residents recommend the lighthouse as one of the most romantic spots on the island, offering commanding views of Kozushima's west coastline, the surrounding Izu Islands, and the Pacific Ocean. The site's elevation provides panoramic vistas that extend across the island's volcanic terrain and azure waters.

While visitors cannot enter the lighthouse interior, a small observation deck located directly below the structure offers excellent views of the surrounding area. The lighthouse is accessible via the Mount Tenjo hiking course, which takes visitors through diverse landscapes including desert-like terrain, lush mountain forests, and coastal cliffs. From the Senryoike Parking Lot, the lighthouse is just a short uphill walk away. The parking area also provides public toilet facilities for visitors.

Kozushima can be reached from Tokyo by multiple transport options. The island is accessible by high-speed jet ferry in approximately 3 hours or by plane in 45 minutes from Chofu Airport. Large passenger ferries operate overnight services from Takeshiba Port, taking approximately 12 hours. On the island, transportation options include village buses, rental cars, bicycles, motorcycles, and taxis. The lighthouse area is located about 30 minutes by electric bicycle from Maehama Beach. Admission to the lighthouse observation area is free, making it an accessible attraction for all visitors exploring Kozushima's natural wonders.
