Marine World Uminonakamichi

Marine World Uminonakamichi stands as one of Kyushu's premier marine attractions, located within the expansive Uminonakamichi Seaside Park in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka. Originally opened in 1989, this public aquarium underwent a major renovation in 2017, during which 90% of its tanks were replaced. The facility operates under the theme of "Kyushu's Sea" and holds accreditation as a museum-equivalent institution through the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

The aquarium has earned recognition for several notable achievements in marine exhibition. Marine World was the first aquarium in Japan to display a sand tiger shark in its Large Panoramic Tank and holds the distinction of being the first facility worldwide to display a preserved specimen of female megamouth shark. The facility currently houses over 350 species of marine life, with approximately 20,000 to 30,000 individual creatures representing the diverse aquatic ecosystems found throughout the Kyushu region.

The centerpiece of visitor experiences is the impressive Large Panoramic Tank, measuring 7 meters deep and 24 meters wide. This dynamic exhibit recreates the open ocean environment where the Japan Current flows through the warm waters of southern Kyushu. Additional highlights include the specialized Jellyfish of Kyushu exhibit on the second floor, where lighting and sound effects create an atmospheric presentation of these marine creatures. The aquarium features engaging dolphin and seal shows, where trainers demonstrate impressive bonds with the marine animals, providing both entertainment and educational value for visitors of all ages.

Adult admission is priced at ¥2,500 (high school students and older), while elementary and junior high school students pay ¥1,200. Children ages 3 to elementary school age are charged ¥700, and seniors 65 and over receive discounted admission at ¥2,200. Additional discounts are available for persons with disabilities, who receive half-price admission along with one accompanying party member. Children aged 0-2 enter free of charge.

Marine World Uminonakamichi is accessible via the JR Kashii Line to Uminonakamichi Station, which provides the most direct route to the facility. The aquarium is situated within the 350-hectare Uminonakamichi Seaside Park, offering visitors the opportunity to combine their marine experience with outdoor recreational activities. The facility provides priority parking for visitors with disabilities and maintains wheelchair accessibility throughout the premises, ensuring comfortable access for all guests to explore Kyushu's remarkable marine heritage.
