Can I go inside the ice cave?

It depends on safety conditions. After heavy summer rain weakened the ground near the cave and signs of rockfall appeared, the operator stopped taking guests inside and guided them to the cave entrance and a safe viewpoint instead. Check with us for the current arrangement before you book.

How does the ice cave form?

The cave appears for about ten weeks each winter along the Noboribetsu River. A mix of local geology and the cold climate lets ice stalactites and stalagmites grow up to three meters long.

Is this tour suitable if I have never snowshoed before?

Yes, as long as you are reasonably fit. The operator describes it as a good introduction to snowshoeing, but the distance and the gentle climbs make it a full, active day.

Where does the hike start?

You drive from adex base to Sun Lavia Ski Resort, where you put on your snowshoes. The forest path leads from the resort to the ice cave, and you return the same way before driving back to adex base.

Guests must be between 18 and 75 years old.
Each booking can include up to 4 people.
A minimum of 2 participants is needed, so solo travelers should inquire first.
Snowshoeing takes more fitness than regular hiking, so expect a moderate challenge.
You should be comfortable walking 8 kilometers in about 4 hours.
Men's snowshoes fit Japan shoe sizes 25.5 to 30.5 centimeters (6 pairs).
Women's snowshoes fit Japan shoe sizes 22 to 27 centimeters (4 pairs).
Dress in thermal layers that you can remove easily as you warm up.
A hat, gloves, and a windproof, waterproof jacket and pants are essential.
Be prepared for temperatures as low as minus 15 degrees Celsius.
