Chiba City Folk Museum

4 (729)Observation DeckTourist AttractionMuseumPoint Of InterestEstablishment

The Chiba City Folk Museum, commonly known as "Chiba Castle", is a municipal history museum housed in a five-storey castle tower built in 1967 on the site of Inohana Castle within Inohana Park, in Chuo Ward, Chiba City. The building is constructed in the style of an Azuchi-Momoyama period castle, though it is not a historical replica — it was purpose-built as a museum. The site holds deep historical significance as the former base of the Chiba clan, a powerful samurai family that ruled the Shimousa region from the late Heian period through the Kamakura period (roughly 12th to 16th centuries).

The museum's galleries span the first to fourth floors and cover the history of Chiba City from the Ritsuryo Period (mid-7th to 10th century) through to modern times, with particular focus on the Chiba clan's role in shaping the Kanto region. A statue of Chiba Tsunetane (1118–1201) stands at the museum entrance — the clan's most celebrated figure, who played a key role in helping Minamoto no Yoritomo establish the Kamakura Shogunate. The collection includes samurai armour, helmets, and swords, alongside materials documenting the culture and development of Chiba City. The second-floor gallery hosts rotating special and feature exhibitions throughout the year.

The observation room on the top floor offers panoramic views of Chiba City. Adjacent to the museum building, a tearoom serves tea and Japanese sweets, and a teahouse overlooks a traditional garden. On the third Saturday of each month, except January and August, the museum holds a hands-on event where visitors can learn about and try on historical clothing. Guided tours for groups and school excursions are available with a reservation made at least two weeks in advance; each tour lasts approximately 30 minutes.

The museum is 7-minute walk from Kenchō-mae Station on the Chiba Urban Monorail, or a 12-minute walk from Hon-Chiba Station on the JR Sotobo Line. Alternatively, from Chiba Station, take Keisei Bus routes 千03, 千03-1, or 千04 toward Chiba Daigaku Byo-in or Minami-Yahagi and alight at Kyodo Hakubutsukan/Chibaken Bunka Kaikan, then walk 3 minutes.
