Former Koga Bank

The Former Koga Bank in Saga City stands as one of Kyushu's finest examples of Meiji-era Western architecture. Built in 1885, this striking red-brick building served as a commercial bank until 1963 and now operates as the Saga City Cultural Museum. The structure represents a pivotal moment in Japan's modernization, when traditional banking practices merged with Western architectural styles during the country's rapid industrialization.

Designed with distinctive Victorian influences, the building features elaborate brickwork, arched windows, and decorative corbels that showcase the craftsmanship of late 19th-century construction techniques. The building was designated as a Saga Prefecture Important Cultural Property, recognizing its architectural and historical significance to the region.

The Former Koga Bank is located in central Saga City, approximately 15 minutes by bus from JR Saga Station. Visitors can take the bus bound for Saga Castle and alight at the nearby stop. The museum is also within walking distance of other historical sites including Saga Castle History Museum, making it easy to combine multiple attractions in one visit.
