Kawaragejigoku, Yuzawa
Kawaragejigoku is a geothermal area in Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture, with volcanic vents, steaming ground, and hot springs from underground geothermal activity. "Kawaragejigoku" means "Hell of Roof Tiles," referring to barren, gray-brown terrain resembling scattered broken roof tiles. Known since the Edo period, locals used the heated ground for warming homes during harsh winters. Geothermal features result from volcanic activity, with hot water and steam rising through earth fissures at temperatures preventing vegetation growth. The site developed within Yuzawa's broader hot spring culture.
Kawaragejigoku displays geothermal phenomena including fumaroles, hot mud pools, and thermally altered ground representing active volcanic processes beneath the surface. The landscape differs visually from surrounding forested mountains. Geothermal heat has been used practically, with sections traditionally employed for cooking by steaming vegetables and eggs in naturally heated ground. Visitors walk pathways observing steam vents, discolored earth, and high-temperature ground. The volcanic terrain provides photography opportunities with steam against mountain backdrops. Food items like eggs, corn, sweet potatoes, and vegetables are placed in mesh baskets and steamed on-site for immediate consumption. Kawaragejigoku is accessible from JR Yuzawa Station on the JR Akita Shinkansen from Tokyo (approximately 3 to 3.5 hours) or conventional lines from Akita City. From the station, the area is 15 to 20 minutes by car or taxi. Limited seasonal buses require schedule verification. Rental cars enable exploration of Yuzawa's ski resorts, hot springs, and Oyasukyo Gorge. The site is in mountains outside the city center.
