Kudan no Taki, measuring approximately 15 meters wide and 7 meters high, stands as the largest waterfall along the Oirase Stream in Aomori Prefecture's Towada region. The waterfall's name, meaning "nine levels," refers to the distinctive stepped formation where water cascades down nine tiers, created through centuries of erosion that shaped the rock face into elegant stairs. Unlike the more dramatic waterfalls in the area, Kudan no Taki features a gentle flow where thin volumes of water run down the rock surface, creating a serene curtain-like effect.
The waterfall serves as an important geological showcase within the Oirase Gorge, a designated National Special Place of Scenic Beauty. The visible stratified layers exemplify the changing sediments deposited over different periods, offering visitors insight into the region's natural formation. The site is particularly striking during autumn, from late October to early November, when the surrounding forest displays vibrant yellow and orange foliage. Spring visitors, from mid-May to June, experience the fresh green canopy and moss-covered rocks that characterize the area's "shinryoku" season.
Visitors can appreciate the waterfall from multiple viewpoints along the well-maintained walking trail that parallels the 14-kilometer Oirase Stream. The waterfall is located approximately 10 minutes' walk from the larger Choshi Otaki Falls, making it a convenient stop for hikers exploring the gorge. The location is relatively quiet compared to more popular waterfalls in the area, offering opportunities for photography without crowds. The trail itself is easy to navigate, though it becomes slippery during winter months and after rainfall.
JR Bus Tohoku operates services from both Aomori Station (2-hour journey) and Hachinohe Station (90-minute journey) to various stops along the Oirase Stream. Buses run approximately once per hour outside of winter, though service is suspended from mid-November through March. Travelers with the JR EAST PASS (Tohoku area) can use these buses at no additional cost. The nearest bus stop is at Choshi Otaki, from which the waterfall is accessible on foot. Parking facilities are available at the Ishigedo rest area for those traveling by car. Entry to the Oirase Stream area and viewing of Kudan no Taki is free of charge
