Kurihama Flower Park, Yokosuka
Kurihama Flower Park (also known as Kurihama Hana no Kuni, meaning "Flower Country") is a public park developed on land formerly occupied by a US military warehouse, located in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The site's transformation into a nature park reflects the broader post-war civic development of the Miura Peninsula, and the park today draws over 500,000 visitors annually.
The park's central attraction is a cosmos and poppy garden covering approximately 23,000 square metres, containing over one million flowers. Poppies dominate in spring and cosmos blossoms fill the park in autumn. The herb garden within the park is considered one of the finest in the Kanto region, featuring around 30,000 herb plants across 130 varieties, including lavender and sage. From the park's elevated position, an observation deck offers panoramic views of Tokyo Bay, the Miura Peninsula, and Mount Fuji on clear days.
Beyond the flower displays, the park includes an Adventure Land playground with a 45-metre roller slide and the iconic Godzilla slide, which is a major draw for families. The on-site Los Marines restaurant sits on a hillside overlooking the Uraga Channel and serves dishes including the park's signature Godzilla curry, pizza, pasta, and desserts. A fleet of steam locomotive-shaped buses called Flower Trains operates on a regular schedule across the rolling grounds, providing a convenient way to navigate the site.
Admission to the park is free, though some individual facilities and events charge a small separate fee. The park is a 15-minute walk from either JR Kurihama Station or Keikyu Kurihama Station on the Keihin Kyuko Line. Visitors arriving by car should use the Yokohama-Yokosuka Road and exit at the Sahara Interchange, approximately 4 kilometres from the park. Three paid parking lots serve different areas of the park. Parking is charged at ¥630 per regular vehicle.
