Minami is the collective name for Osaka's southern entertainment and shopping district, encompassing Namba, Shinsaibashi, Dotonbori, and the surrounding neighborhoods in the center of the city.
The name simply means "south," the counterpart to Kita (north) centered on Umeda, and together the two poles define the commercial geography of Osaka for most residents and visitors.
Minami is where Osaka's personality is most concentrated and most visible. The food culture, the street energy, the neon, the comedy clubs, the takoyaki stands, and the famous crab and blowfish restaurant signs that overhang the streets — all of this is Minami. It is the densest expression of what Osaka is, and for most visitors it is the defining experience of the city.
The district developed as Osaka's popular entertainment center during the Edo period, when the theaters, puppet shows, and restaurants of Dotonbori attracted residents from across the city.
Minami is loud, crowded, and relentlessly stimulating from mid-morning until well past midnight. Dotonbori along the canal is the most intense stretch, where enormous illuminated signs, competing restaurant touts, street food vendors, and the constant movement of thousands of people create an atmosphere that is exhausting and exhilarating in equal measure.
Shinsaibashi-suji shopping arcade, running north from Dotonbori, is one of the longest covered shopping streets in Japan and covers the full range from international luxury brands at the northern end to more accessible fashion and lifestyle shops toward Namba. Walking the full length gives a good picture of the commercial range of the district.
The streets between Namba Station and the Hozenji Yokocho alley have a more intimate, older Osaka quality that is easy to miss if you stay on the main thoroughfares. The small alley behind Hozenji Temple with its moss-covered water deity and tiny flanking restaurants is one of the most atmospheric spots in the city.
Namba Station is served by the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line, Sennichimae Line, and Yotsubashi Line. Nankai Namba Station adjacent to it connects to Kansai International Airport in about 40 minutes on the Nankai Rapi:t express.
