Mitsui Main Building
The Mitsui Main Building is located in the Nihonbashi district of Chuo Ward, Tokyo. Constructed in 1929, the building was designed by James Stewart & Co. in collaboration with Mitsui Real Estate as headquarters for the Mitsui zaibatsu, one of Japan's largest business conglomerates. The seven-story structure features neoclassical design with Corinthian columns, symmetrical facades, and ornate stonework typical of major financial institutions during the interwar period.
Designated a Tangible Cultural Property by Tokyo, the building represents early modern corporate architecture when Western design principles were adopted during Japan's modernization. Nihonbashi was Edo-period Tokyo's commercial heart and the origin of the five major highways from the shogunate capital. The building stands near the reconstructed Nihonbashi Bridge, maintaining the district's historical role as a finance and trade center.
Visitors view the building's exterior from street level, as it remains commercial office space with restricted interior access. The prominent corner position at the Chuo-dori intersection provides clear sightlines. Nearby attractions include the Mitsui Memorial Museum in Mitsui Tower displaying Mitsui family art collections, the historic Nihonbashi Bridge, and Mitsukoshi, Japan's oldest department store with roots in the Mitsui merchant house.
The building is approximately 5 minutes' walk from Mitsukoshimae Station on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line and Hanzomon Line, or 7 minutes' walk from Nihonbashi Station on the Tokyo Metro Tozai Line, Ginza Line, and Toei Asakusa Line. From Tokyo Station, walk approximately 15 minutes. There is no admission fee for exterior viewing; interior access is unavailable. The Mitsui Memorial Museum charges approximately ¥1,000 for adults.
