Nagisa no eki Tateyama

Nagisa no Eki Tateyama is a waterfront public facility located on the southern coast of the Boso Peninsula in Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture. Its roots trace back to the former Chiba Prefectural Awa Museum, which was redeveloped in April 2009 into a port-facing community hub. The current facility officially opened on March 25, 2012, and has since served as one of the region's central tourist destinations.

The site holds real cultural weight through the Museum of Nagisa, a branch of the Tateyama City Municipal Museum. It preserves over 2,144 nationally designated cultural assets tied to the maritime heritage of the Boso Peninsula, including Maiwai — celebratory kimono jackets historically gifted by fishing company owners to fishermen after a large catch — as well as traditional wooden ships built using near-extinct Japanese shipbuilding techniques and whaling artifacts.

Visitors can explore the Seaside Plaza (Umibe no Hiroba), an aquarium-style space featuring large tanks of sea creatures native to Tateyama Bay, including a touch pool and themed displays. A particular draw is the Sakana-kun Gallery, dedicated to Japan's beloved celebrity marine biologist, illustrator, and TV personality Sakana-kun, who serves as the facility's honorary station master. The gallery displays his original fish illustrations, personal instruments, and childhood sketch books. Daily fish-feeding events take place at 14:30.

The rooftop observation deck offers panoramic views of Tateyama Bay, Tateyama Castle, and — on clear days — Mount Fuji. Extending from the facility is the Tateyama Sunset Pier, the longest pedestrian pier in Japan at 500 metres, a popular spot for sunset viewing. The complex also includes the Umi no Marche Tateyama souvenir and produce market and the Tateyama Nagisa Shokudo restaurant, both focused on local seafood and regional ingredients.

Admission to the Seaside Plaza and Sakana-kun Gallery is free. The Museum of Nagisa charges a small entry fee. Nagisa no Eki Tateyama is a 15-minute walk west of Tateyama Station on the Uchibo Line, which connects to Tokyo in approximately two hours by limited express train. The facility is also accessible by highway bus from central Tokyo in roughly two hours, or by car via the Futtsu-Tateyama Expressway (approximately 15 minutes from Tomiura Interchange).
