Nishikigawa Railway

The Nishikigawa Railway is a scenic railway line running through the mountainous Yamaguchi Prefecture in western Japan, stretching 32.7 kilometers between Kawanishi Station and Nishikigawa-Seiryū Station. Originally part of the Japanese National Railways' Gantoku Line, this section was transferred to private operation in 1987 when JNR was privatized. The railway preserves a historic connection through rural landscapes that would otherwise remain difficult to access by public transport.

The line follows the Nishiki River through forested valleys and alongside dramatic gorges, offering passengers views of traditional Japanese countryside. The route is particularly celebrated during autumn when the surrounding mountains display vibrant fall foliage, typically peaking from mid-October through November. The railway also provides access to the Kintai Bridge area in Iwakuni, one of Japan's most photographed wooden arch bridges, located near the line's terminus.

Visitors ride aboard nostalgic railcars that evoke mid-20th century Japanese rail travel, with some services operating vintage diesel cars. The journey takes approximately one hour for the full route, making it a leisurely experience rather than practical transportation. Several stations along the way serve as departure points for hiking trails into the surrounding Chugoku Mountains, while others provide access to hot spring facilities and rural villages that maintain traditional architecture and ways of life.

The railway operates daily with multiple departures, though frequency varies by season. Standard one-way fares range from ¥300 to ¥1,290 depending on distance traveled, with unlimited day passes available for ¥2,060 for adults. Access to the line begins at Iwakuni Station on the JR Sanyo Main Line, where passengers transfer to Nishikigawa Railway services. The railway is not covered by the Japan Rail Pass, requiring separate ticket purchase. Rental bicycles are available at select stations for exploring the riverside areas independently.
