Udo Shrine occupies the cave where Ugayafukiaezu-no-Mikoto, father of Emperor Jimmu, was mythologically born. His mother, Princess Toyotama-hime, gave birth in this coastal grotto, establishing it as a sacred site in Shinto tradition.
Visitors descend a steep stone stairway called the Undo with uneven steps and railings. The path requires moderate fitness for the return climb and can be challenging for those with mobility limitations. Proper footwear is necessary.
Udo Shrine is located approximately 40 kilometers south of Miyazaki city center along the Nichinan coast. The journey takes roughly one hour by car via the Nichinan Coastal Road or about 90 minutes using public transportation with a train and bus combination.
The Nichinan Coastal Road offers scenic Pacific views and connects to other attractions including Sun Messe Nichinan with its moai statues, Obi Castle town with preserved samurai residences, and Aoshima Island with its distinctive rock formations. These sites can be combined into a day trip from Miyazaki city.
