Udo Shrine

Udo Shrine stands dramatically within a coastal cave along the rugged shoreline of Nichinan in Miyazaki Prefecture, southern Kyushu. Unlike most Shinto shrines situated on elevated ground, this sacred site occupies a natural grotto facing the Pacific Ocean, making it one of Japan's most unusually positioned religious structures. The shrine's vivid vermilion buildings contrast strikingly against the dark volcanic rock and azure waters, creating a memorable visual impression.

The shrine dates back approximately 1,300 years and is dedicated to Ugayafukiaezu-no-Mikoto, the father of Japan's legendary first emperor, Emperor Jimmu. According to Japanese mythology, this deity was born in the cave where the shrine now stands. The site has long been associated with prayers for safe childbirth, marital harmony, and maritime safety. The main hall, rebuilt in 1997 following traditional architectural methods, maintains the shrine's historical appearance while preserving its connection to ancient legends.

Visitors descend a steep stone stairway known as the "Undo" to reach the shrine entrance, passing under several torii gates along the clifftop path. Inside the cave complex, worshippers can view the vermilion-lacquered main sanctuary and several smaller auxiliary shrines. A popular ritual involves purchasing undama, small clay balls, and attempting to throw them into a rope circle atop a large rock formation called Kameishi (Turtle Rock) in the waters below. Successfully landing a ball is believed to bring good fortune, with men throwing with their left hand and women with their right.

The shrine grounds include a spring called "Ochichiame" (breast candy water), where the mythological princess Toyotama-hime is said to have left her breast milk for her newborn son. Women often purchase candy made from this water, believing it promotes successful breastfeeding. The coastal location also provides dramatic views of the Pacific, particularly striking during sunrise.

Udo Shrine is located approximately 40 kilometers south of Miyazaki city center. Visitors can reach the shrine by taking the JR Nichinan Line to Aburatsu Station, then transferring to a local bus bound for Udo Shrine, which takes about 20 minutes. Alternatively, rental cars provide more flexible access along the scenic Nichinan Coastal Road. The shrine is also accessible via tour buses from Miyazaki city.
