Welcome to Tokyo!
Most people want to hit the ground running, especially if they've been to Japan before. If this is you, Shinjuku is a great place to base your stay. It's centrally located and gives you easy access to every area of Tokyo. If you're looking for a slower start and an easier pace, Asakusa is a great family-friendly area close to Senso-Ji. For the first day, I love just walking around, checking out shops, and getting acclimated. Another option is to hop on a tour bus to get a feel for what's in Tokyo.

This is my #1 dinner recommendation in Tokyo! You don't have to be vegan to enjoy these homemade dumplings from a small kitchen.

Pick an area of Tokyo and explore!
I've heard people say you only need 2 or 3 days in Tokyo. Not true. I've been to Tokyo three times for extended stays and I still discover something new every time I go. There is SO much to see so don't try to do it all. I recommend picking one of the wards or "cities" of Tokyo, like Ueno, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ginza, Asakusa, Harajuku, or Akihabara, depending on your personal interests. But I've included some of my favorite sites in the city from classic sites to off-the-beaten path!

If you're looking for great views of the city, most people head to Shibuya Sky or Tokyo Skytree. We preferred this one. Yes, it's touristy but worth it to understand the scale of Tokyo!

Pre-book your tour of the palace. Offered in multiple languages!

Go early to avoid the crowds. While there, check out the large Don Quixote nearby or go shopping in the Kappabashi Kitchen District!

Some people love it. Some people hate it. Personally, I thought it was a transcendent experience. And make reservations at the tea house for a unique experience!

Planets vs Borderless: I love them both but many people prefer Planets because it's more active and better for kids. But you will need to walk barefoot through the water!

You could spend a full day here. It's situated near beautiful Ueno Park and a great introduction to Japanese history.

You definitely have to plan in advance to score tickets to this museum. They typically open for online purchase on the 10th of the month before you want to travel. It's a lottery system but if you get tickets, you're in for a magical treat!

Take a break from shrines and temples and visit this architecturally stark cathedral in the heart of Tokyo.

Visit an Edo-style replica village on the outskirts of Tokyo.
Everyone heads south to the Golden Route. If you're looking for something different (and perhaps a bit cooler during the summer months), this is a great way to maximize your time and see Hokkaido before heading back down to Tokyo.
I made the most of my time by flying to Sapporo (it's cheaper than you think) and then making my way across Japan's northern countryside with major stops along the way.
This itinerary incorporate a lot of travel days without any activities. You can plan those as rest days or take a look at shorter activities or visit great restaurants depending on your travel schedule. Flexibility is key to a great time in Japan!
