Kotohikihama Beach

Kotohikihama Beach, located in Kyotango City in northern Kyoto Prefecture, is renowned as one of Japan's few "singing sand" beaches. The beach stretches approximately 1.8 kilometers along the Sea of Japan coastline and derives its name from the distinctive squeaking sound the sand produces when walked upon, which resembles the sound of a traditional Japanese stringed instrument called a koto. This rare acoustic phenomenon occurs due to the high silica content and particular grain shape of the pure white quartz sand, which remains remarkably clean thanks to the area's strong coastal currents.

The beach has been celebrated in Japanese literature and poetry for centuries, with references dating back to the Edo period. In 1996, Kotohikihama was selected as one of Japan's "100 Best Beaches" and has also earned designation as part of the San'in Kaigan Geopark, recognizing its geological significance. The singing sand phenomenon only occurs when the sand is completely dry and clean, making it a natural indicator of the beach's pristine environmental condition. Local residents take great pride in maintaining the beach's cleanliness, as pollution or moisture prevents the sand from producing its characteristic sound.

Visitors to Kotohikihama can experience the singing sand by walking barefoot along the shore, particularly during sunny, dry weather when the acoustic effect is most pronounced. The beach offers excellent swimming conditions during summer months, with generally calm waters protected by the surrounding headlands. The area is also popular for viewing spectacular sunsets over the Sea of Japan. Adjacent to the beach, the Kotohikihama Narisuna Shrine has historically been associated with the beach's mystical qualities, and visitors often stop by to appreciate this cultural connection.

Kotohikihama Beach is accessible by train and bus from major cities in the Kansai region. The nearest station is Kotohikihama Station on the Kyoto Tango Railway, approximately 2.5 hours from Kyoto Station with transfers at Fukuchiyama or Amanohashidate. From Kotohikihama Station, the beach is roughly a 5-minute walk. Visitors traveling by car can reach the beach via Route 178 along the coastal highway, with free parking available near the beach access points.
