倉吉白壁土蔵群

Kurayoshi White Wall Warehouses is a historic merchant district in Kurayoshi City, Tottori Prefecture, featuring preserved buildings and warehouses from the Edo period through early 20th century. The district emerged along the Tamagawa River as a commercial center for the agricultural region, with merchants constructing warehouses for storing rice, sake, and goods. White plaster walls and red clay roof tiles provided fire resistance and climate control for commodities. The area prospered during Edo and Meiji periods, with its architectural character intact due to minimal modern redevelopment. Preservation efforts from the late 20th century onward maintained the traditional streetscape through restoration work.

The district demonstrates well-preserved merchant architecture from Japan's feudal and early modern periods. White-walled structures line narrow streets creating cohesive historical scenery. The warehouses, called kura, have thick earthen walls covered in white plaster with black tile details and latticed windows. Approximately 40 preserved buildings including warehouses, merchant homes, and shops occupy blocks along the river. The stone-edged Tamagawa River flows through the district. The area represents inland Tottori's commercial and architectural history.

Visitors walk streets with restored warehouses now housing shops, cafes, restaurants, galleries, and museums. Buildings retain original features while serving modern purposes. Shops sell Tottori crafts including pottery, textiles, and sake. Converted warehouse cafes and restaurants offer dining in historic settings. The Kurayoshi Fureai Kouryuu-kan museum in a former warehouse presents district history. Riverside architecture and white wall water reflections provide photographic subjects.

The district is approximately 15 to 20 minutes walking from JR Kurayoshi Station on the JR San'in Main Line, or 10 minutes by bus. Limited express trains from Tottori City take approximately 40 minutes. The JR Super Hakuto Limited Express from Osaka or Kyoto requires approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Highway buses connect from Kansai cities. Admission to streets is free, with individual venues charging free to 500 yen. The walkable district needs no additional transport.
